The Minnesota Timberwolves preseason just ended, and already the Timberwolves front office machinery is whirring to reset the Timberwolves roster final adjustments for the 2023-24 NBA season. True to form, the Timberwolves appeared to weigh the game against the New York Knicks heavily and used the performance from that game to start pruning their roster.

The game was not arbitrarily focused on just to pick a game from the hat. The Timberwolves’ third preseason game was highly competitive, showcased some of the best and worst performances from the team, and clearly became the basis for decisions that are not manifesting in changing the Timberwolves roster.

We pointed out the horrific optics in the game against the Knicks for the Two-Way contract holder, forward Matt Ryan. It was alarming to witness him sit the entire game, while Exhibit 10 contract holder, PG Daishen Nix, saw a minor amount of playing time.

Time for Timberwolves to finalize the roster

And that seems to have led to the latest Timberwolves roster moves:

The Minnesota Timberwolves need to afford a development roster spot to address their need for a future point guard. And Daishen Nix has been a sneaky solid contributor for the Timberwolves in the 2023 preseason.

But don’t expect that the Timberwolves roster moves are completed. There was some confusion over the contract status of PG Tyrese Martin. Originally reported to be an Exhibit 10 contract, it was later corrected to a standard one-year non-guaranteed contract.

I am convinced that backup center Luka Garza is deserving of a standard NBA contract. With the latest move to ensure that the team has Daishen Nix on a Two-Way contract, I believe that could open the door for the team to upgrade Garza to a standard contract. That would also open a slot in the Timberwolves Two-Way contracts to sign an additional player.

Stay tuned . . .
