Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns were teammates with the Minnesota Timberwolves for four seasons. That all changed when Towns was traded to the New York Knicks late in the 2024 offseason. It was a surprising move, but deemed necessary by the Wolves' front office due to Towns' substantial contract.
It has been clear since then, though, that the two have remained tight. Edwards was at Fanatics Fest at the Javits Center in New York City on Friday. He spoke about how close he and LaMelo Ball have already become, and he also revealed how he helped out Towns when the Knicks were taking on the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
“I was talking to him (Towns) before every game because we played San Antonio," Edwards said. "Just giving him tips and stuff on which players like to go which way and stuff about Wemby. I gave him a little cheat code, and he passed the test so shout out KAT.”
Towns certainly passed the test, and it made a lot of Timberwolves fans happy to see a member of their favorite team for nine years reach the mountaintop.
Ant-Man wants to be the next to eliminate the Spurs
Towns and Edwards had their successes together as teammates as they reached the playoffs for three straight years. They helped Minnesota reach the Western Conference finals during their last year together in 2024, the first time they advanced that far since 2004.
Now two years removed from being teammates, the two remain close friends. After the Knicks humiliated the Atlanta Hawks in Game 6 to close out their opening-round matchup, Towns shouted into the camera for Ant to get better. This was after Edwards suffered a bone bruise and left knee hyperextension in Game 4 of Minnesota’s first-round series against the Denver Nuggets.
Edwards made a quicker-than-expected return to the court by playing in the series opener against the Spurs in the following round.
Talking to ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt after the Knicks won the championship, Towns made sure to praise all his former Timberwolves teammates, specifically Edwards. He mentioned that the two talk all the time, which Ant-Man confirmed at Fanatics Fest.
So Edwards can take a small sliver of credit for Towns winning a chip. Perhaps Towns will return the favor and help Edwards pass the test if the Timberwolves and Spurs meet up again in next year’s playoffs.
