Anthony Edwards' haunting quote does little to inspire hope after embarrassing loss

There aren't many positives from Saturday's performance.

There’s no need to sugarcoat what happened on Saturday. It was a BAD loss by the Minnesota Timberwolves. They lost at home to the Brooklyn Nets, who entered the game at 9-19. A Nets team that Kyle Kuzma claimed w trying to lose after his Milwaukee Bucks lost to them earlier this season.

Now in his sixth season, Anthony Edwards clearly cares a lot about winning. It’s understandable that a loss like this would hurt. Still, Edwards’ postgame comments were somewhat surprising as they were quite downtrodden and dejected.

Ant-Man clearly frustrated after loss

In the loss to Brooklyn, Edwards dropped 28 points on 10-22 shooting (2-7 on 3s, 6-9 from the foul line). Nearly half of his points (13, and more than half of his team’s points) came in the third quarter, one that saw Minnesota outscored 36-23.

One couldn’t expect Ant-Man to be in a positive mood after the game, but his comments to the media had to be a bit concerning to fans of the Timberwolves. The quote is listed below, but the comment that stood out most was Edwards stating that, “I guess this is just Timberwolves basketball.”

Ouch.

Minnesota entered the day 12-5 at home, so for the most part, fans haven’t had much reason to boo at the Target Center. The Nets are now 7-3 in December as well, so they haven’t been nearly as bad as their overall record of late. The Timberwolves also didn’t have an answer for Cam Thomas, who scored 30 in his return to action after being out for more than a month and a half.

The frustration may have still existed from Edwards from the Christmas Day game against the Denver Nuggets. A valiant comeback by the Timberwolves in the fourth quarter forced overtime. All Nikola Jokic did was set a new NBA record for points in an overtime period to lead Denver to victory after Minnesota scored the first nine points of the extra frame. Edwards was ejected late in OT after picking up two technicals.

Mostly win against under-.500 teams

What did Edwards mean by the Nets game being “Timberwolves basketball”? The 24-year-old would likely have different comments today rather than just right after a disappointing defeat, but he must have had a reason in his mind to say that.

The Wolves normally beat the non-winning teams on their schedule. They are now 15-3 on the year against teams under .500. Their only loss had been a meltdown against the Sacramento Kings in November, but they also lost to the Memphis Grizzlies on December 17. After the Memphis game, Minnesota won three in a row before losing its last two.

It’s a long season, and the hope is that Edwards and the Timberwolves can rebound. Minnesota is about to embark on a four-game East coast trip starting on Monday against the Chicago Bulls.
