Anthony Edwards is eligible for an extension in the offseason. Now, Ant-Man still has three years left on his current deal for just shy of $157 million. He can have two years added on top of that for an additional $121.6 million.
There is no chance that Edwards agrees to extend his current contract this offseason.
A fan not all that familiar with his situation may take that as a sign that the 2020 first overall pick isn’t happy with the Minnesota Timberwolves. I’m here to tell you that it means absolutely nothing, as by waiting a year, Ant will be able to sign for substantially more.
Edwards can extend for way more in the summer of 2027
Due to playing in 61 games in 2025-26, Edwards did not reach the 65-game minimum threshold to be eligible for end-of-season honors such as All-NBA. While Cade Cunningham and Luka Doncic challenged their being ineligible and won, Edwards tried to do likewise and was denied.
Now, if he makes an All-NBA team next year, then the max value of the extension Ant can sign significantly increases. Edwards would then be eligible to sign a four-year extension worth $300 million. Per Bobby Marks of ESPN, the first year of the extension (2029-30) would see him make $67 million.
So let’s see…would the wiser decision for Edwards be to agree to add two years to his current deal at an average of $60.8 million per year, or wait after one more season, and add four years at $75 million per year?Â
As long as Edwards plays in enough games to be eligible for All-NBA next season, it’s close to a given that he will be on one of the three teams.
I believe that Ant-Man was in line to make the All-NBA second team for the third-straight year and finish in the top 10 in MVP voting (also for the third-straight year) had he played enough. Edwards averaged a career-high 28.8 points per contest in 2025-26 with career-bests in both field goal and 3-point percentage.
It was a disappointing ending to the 2025-26 season for Edwards and the Timberwolves. After their series with the San Antonio Spurs was tied 2-2, Minnesota went on to lose the next two outings by a combined 59 points. It’s still a Wolves team that has won the fourth-most playoff games since 2024, just 1 less than the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks (although NY can still add to their total).
When Edwards doesn’t sign an extension in the summer, it doesn’t mean that he’s unhappy playing for the Timberwolves. It doesn’t mean that he’s looking to be traded. It just means both he and Bill Duffy (his agent) are well aware that it is wise to hold off on signing in order to get maximum value later.
