On Monday, the NBA's all-star starters were released, and somehow, Anthony Edwards wasn't named. Instead, Steph Curry was named, despite Edwards leading him in nearly every statistical category and having a better team record.
The unfortunate truth for Edwards and Timberwolves fans is that, as long as Players like Steph Curry and LeBron James are around and still playing at a high level, he'll never have the fan voting that those players have to secure his spot.
On the Curry front, I want to make it clear he is absolutely still an all-star. He's dragged a Warriors roster that isn't great to being competitive in a tough Western Conference. However, all-star starters should be the best five players in each conference, but this year, that wasn't the case.
Anthony Edwards is having a career year
Edwards is averaging 29.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting over 50 percent from the field and over 41 percent from beyond the arc. He's doing this while also being the clear frontrunner for Clutch Player of the Year, and leading the Timberwolves to a top-four seed so far.
Anthony Edwards snubbed. Steph over Ant is just a legacy vote, it's not close this year. https://t.co/0vBxNScFhr pic.twitter.com/NveA9qKowD

Both players and media voted for Edwards to become a starter, but he finished seventh in fan voting, which counts for 50 percent of the votes; therefore, not qualifying as a starter. He even finished behind Deni Avdija in fan voting. This will unfortunately be the reality until guys like Curry either call it a career, or steeply decline (which I don't see happening).
Why Curry ultimately got voted in
Curry simply has a bigger fanbase, which he's earned. Not to mention his legacy puts him as a potential top 10 player of all time when he hangs it up. He has all of this going for him while still putting up elite numbers in his age 37 season. With fan voting counting this heavily towards the starters, it would be rare if he doesn't start in any All-Star game he qualifies for for the rest of his career.
Curry has done more than enough in his career to warrant himself getting votes that are more catered toward his legacy as opposed to the current season. Edwards will still undoubtedly become an all-star this year; he will probably be the number one reserve chosen, but it's just unfortunate that what prevented him from getting his first start is out of his control.
The reality is, as long as a guy like Curry is still playing, Edwards can have better stats, a better team, or both. But in the general NBA fans' eyes, Steph Curry has earned the title of best American player, and that throne is his until he's ready to give it up.
