I think everyone knows that Anthony Edwards is off to an incredible start six years into his career. However, I don't think enough people realize just how much of a historic trajectory the Minnesota Timberwolves star is on. During Tuesday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies, Ant-Man notched 41 points. With this, he surpassed Kobe Bryant for the second-most 40-point games by a shooting guard before turning 25 -- he now only trails Michael Jordan.
Ant currently has 28 40-point games before age 25, while Jordan finished with 56 before 25. Since Edwards turns 25 in August, he won't be able to surpass Jordan for this title. Regardless, whenever you're surpassing Kobe and moving closer to Jordan, that's a great sign, and it highlights the incredible trajectory that Edwards is on.
And no, I'm not saying that Edwards is the next Jordan or Kobe; that's a high bar, and ultimately, he's his own person. Nevertheless, it's hard to argue that Edwards isn't on track to be at least a top-25-level player of all-time, and this feat is further evidence of that.
Anthony Edwards is on an all-time trajectory and he's only getting better
It's rare for a 24-year-old to have led his team to two conference finals appearances -- and this year Edwards could add to his stellar résumé. Furthermore, Ant has already made four All-Star teams and is on track to make his third All-NBA team this season.
Edwards is already one of the best three-level scorers in the league, and he might even be the best. He is an elite scorer from everywhere on the court and is able to hit some of the most absurd shots in the league.
What really stands out with Ant-Man, though, is the ability to get better each season. Last season, it was about becoming an elite 3-point shooter, and this year, he added a mid-range jumper, which, in turn, has made him an unstoppable clutch time scorer. Edwards has increased his raw points per game average and efficiency over the past two seasons.
Frankly, I don't know if there's another level for Ant to reach as a scorer; he's that good already. However, Edwards could round out his game more as a playmaker and with more consistent defensive focus.
These improvements would make Ant-Man a clear top-three player in the league and could set him up as an MVP winner. Edwards is already on a historic trajectory; the thought of what he could be with some all-around improvements should be a scary one for the rest of the league.
