Anthony Edwards needs Timberwolves to help him follow Jaylen Brown's footsteps

The Minnesota Timberwolves need to make trades akin to the 2023 Boston Celtics.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have a chance to shake up their roster this summer, giving themselves the best possible chance to help Anthony Edwards win a championship. They could copy exactly how Jaylen Brown won his first ring, as the Boston Celtics made two big-swing moves in the summer of 2023 that helped them win the title in 2024.

After Boston had failed to get over the hump time and time again – similar to the Wolves – the front office decided to make some huge changes. The Celtics traded Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis, then they flipped Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams for Jrue Holiday.

Those are the types of moves the Timberwolves should look to make to help Edwards this summer.

Timberwolves need to make trades like the 2023 Celtics

There are reports that the Wolves could potentially look to significantly change their roster this summer. Minnesota’s core is Edwards, Naz Reid, Jaden McDaniels, and Joan Beringer, meaning everyone else could be on the chopping block.

That would still give the Timberwolves some room to make similar moves to the ones the Celtics managed to make in 2023. Moves that helped them win a championship that very season.

Porzingis gave the Celtics a different look at the center spot. He gave them an additional scoring option, extra floor-spacing, and improved rim protection (especially since Williams got moved).

As for Holiday, he was a perfect veteran presence for them. He won a title in 2021 with the Milwaukee Bucks, and the year prior, he was an All-Star. He may have been the third-best player in Boston during its title run.

Those are the types of trades the Timberwolves should try to make this summer, as Edwards needs as much help as possible. The Wolves need new talent in the mix.

Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert are two large contracts. Both are tradable. The Timberwolves could find a way to trade them for two upgrades, or at least for a way to significantly change the team.

Minnesota has a real chance to make significant additions to its roster this summer, bolstering Edwards’ chances of winning a title in the next five years.

It’s not easy to win in the NBA. And with the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder atop the West, it’s never been harder to make the Finals.

Trading Randle and Gobert for the right supporting pieces this summer will be essential to helping Edwards get over the hump, just like it was for Brown and the Celtics.
