Anthony Edwards truly burst onto the scene last season. His level of play, while great, was not that big of a step up from the previous year. But it was the level of overall team success the Minnesota Timberwolves enjoyed that allowed the national media to begin recognizing just how talented Edwards is on a consistent basis. Winning cures everything, as the old saying goes.
With an increased spotlight came greater expectations for Ant and for his team as well. Although Minnesota was essentially forced to make a big change to begin the current season, we are seeing the Wolves slowly round into form. In due time, they could be at the top of the Western Conference standings once again.
What this team success means is that Edwards will once again be in consideration for some notable individual awards this season. After earning an All-NBA second team honor last season, Ant will be looking to put himself back in that exclusive club once again. We can assume that doing so is not his top priority, as we know Ant wants to win over all else. However, desiring to be recognized for your body of work is not necessarily a bad thing, either.
Edwards will have a greater shot at All-NBA with Luka's injury
Some recent injury news may ultimately boost Edwards' chances of landing back on an All-NBA team this year. After Luka Doncic went down with a calf injury during the Christmas Day game, it was announced that he would miss an extended period of time. Doncic will be re-evaluated in one month. What this means is that assuming the timeline remains, Luka will have missed enough games to disqualify himself for All-NBA consideration.
Obviously we do not celebrate injuries in any way, but it is notable that a player who would typically be a shoo-in for All-NBA will be disqualified per the minimum games requirement. Doncic is currently on an incredible run of five consecutive All-NBA team nominations in a row, dating back to his sophomore season. It is bizarre that the games played rule is what will seemingly ruin his streak, but there are no compensations for injuries.
Anthony Edwards is already building incredible brand power via his strong individual play and partnership with Adidas. Another All-NBA team selection would only increase his credibility and continue to make him one of the biggest names in the sport.
