Anthony Edwards' progression as a three-point shooter is simply unfathomable

No one saw him getting to this level.

Coming into this season, there were quite a few questions for the Minnesota Timberwolves. With Karl-Anthony Towns gone as well as Donte DiVincenzo and Julius Randle becoming part of the equation, few people knew exactly what the Wolves were going to look like on either end of the floor. There was still the expectation for this to be a great defensive team, but the offensive side of things was unquestionably going to look different.

What did that mean for Anthony Edwards? Well, for starters, he was going to have to adjust to life alongside Randle, and learn how he liked to play. But along with that, there was also going to be the chance for Edwards to become even more of a focal point in Minnesota's offense. While a great player in his own right, Julius is not quite the offensive engine that KAT is.

And now, what we have seen over the last four and a half months is Ant's process of growing into that even bigger role. He had some slumps earlier in the season, without question. But we are now seeing him consistently deliver and put up big numbers as the Timberwolves' unrivaled top option. His most notable area of progression? Three-point shooting.

Edwards is tied for the most three-point makes this NBA season

If you were not aware, Edwards is currently tied for the most three-point shots made by any NBA player in the 2024-25 season, with 244 makes from beyond the arc (ironically, the only other player with that many threes this season is former Timberwolves player Malik Beasley). Ant has become an absolute gunner from beyond the arc, and it is obviously not like he was a poor three-point shooter before.

But the rapid improvement Edwards has made in this department is simply a stunning development. Before this season, he had never made more than 3.0 three-pointers per game in a season, and he had never attempted more than 8.4 per night since being drafted by Minnesota. Now, he has quickly risen to the level of becoming one of the greatest three-point shooters in the best league in the world.

His 44-point night against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night included six made three-pointers - marking the 13th time this season Edwards has knocked down at least six threes in a game. His marksmanship from beyond the arc has changed the game for the Timberwolves, and the more he continues to improve, the more he will begin to be viewed as a "best player on a championship team" caliber guy.
