In an 82-game season, even the best of the best NBA players are bound to have a few off nights by their standards. Anthony Edwards is certainly in that group of the game’s top players. While he’s in the midst of a rough stretch, it’s a good sign that the Timberwolves are still finding ways to win, as they have in their last two outings.
Winning even when Ant-Man is not at his best
Minnesota improved to 10-5 on the season with its 120-109 victory over the Wizards on Wednesday night. Julius Randle led the way with 32 points, while Naz Reid continued his excellent play after a slow start to the season with 28 of his own.
It isn’t often that the top two scorers for the Timberwolves are named without Edwards being mentioned, but that was the case on Wednesday. He finished a distant third with 18, and it came on 6-20 shooting from the field (1-8 from beyond the arc). Just four of his points came in a very quiet second half for the superstar guard.
In its previous game, Minnesota easily disposed of an undermanned Mavericks squad. This was despite Edwards making just 5 of his 14 field goal tries and connecting on just 1-7 from 3-point range. His 13 points are a season low if not including the five he scored against the Pacers on October 26, when he left after just three minutes.
Having 31 total points on 32.4% shooting over his last two games clearly isn’t close to Edwards’ best work. Minnesota is still 2-0 in those contests, though.

Ugly shooting numbers last three games
While it's excellent to see the Timberwolves find a way into the win column when Edwards isn’t close to his A-game, their last two games have come against teams with a combined 5-25 record.
In Minnesota’s game before those two, Edwards had another night struggling to score efficiently. Yes, he finished with 26 points, but he shot 8-23 from the field and 0-8 from deep. That game didn’t result in a win as they fell to the 11-3 Nuggets.
Do the math, and in Edwards’ last three games, he is shooting 19-57 from the field (33.3%) and 2-23 from 3-point territory (8.7%). Regardless of the opponent, though, it’s always good for your team to win when your best player is far from his best. Winning two of their last three with Edwards struggling in each of them is a good sign. Edwards will absolutely find his shooting stroke again shortly.
No, they didn’t beat the best opponent of the three, but that’s more of a team issue that needs to be fixed. They are now incredibly 10-0 against teams under .500 and 0-5 against winning clubs.
