The Minnesota Timberwolves added a few players on Exhibit 10 deals as training camp nears. They face long odds of making the roster on opening night, but if they play well enough, it will keep them on the radar of other NBA teams.
One of the players Minnesota recently signed is shooting guard Antonio Reeves. Selected with the 47th overall pick in 2024, Reeves doesn't have much playing time at the NBA level.
That being said, Reeves has proven he can be a sharpshooter. That likely was the main reason the Timberwolves decided to give him a look. No, he probably won’t make the roster to start the season, but if Reeves can showcase his shooting in training camp and the preseason, the Wolves may release one of their two-way players to sign him to a two-way contract.
Reeves' 3-point shooting could help any team
Thus far, Reeves has appeared in 54 NBA regular-season games. He played in 44 games with the New Orleans Pelicans and another 10 last season with the Charlotte Hornets.
In his brief NBA career, the 25-year-old has made 58 of his 142 3-point attempts (40.8 percent).
Reeves has been an accurate long-distance shooter in the G League and college as well. In his final year collegiately at Kentucky, he was one of the most accurate 3-point shooters, making 44.7 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Despite his short professional career, Reeves has three NBA games in which he scored at least 20 points. His career high came early in his first year with New Orleans, when he scored 34 points.
As of now, the Timberwolves have one roster spot available. Reeves shouldn’t be seen as a favorite to earn it. Minnesota doesn’t have to fill it, either, and the team carried 14 players on the standard roster last season. That seems like the most likely route Minnesota will go unless someone truly wows them.
Minnesota’s two-way players are Zyon Pullin, Enrique Freeman, and Rocco Zikarsky. Of the three, Freeman’s two-way spot looks like the most tenuous. Since Reeves has only two years of NBA experience, he is still eligible to receive a two-way contract.
Reeves certainly has his flaws; otherwise, he wouldn’t need to battle for an NBA roster spot with his 3-point prowess. He isn’t particularly strong, and other teams exploit that when he is on defense. Reeves hasn’t shown many other NBA-level skills besides scoring and shooting.
Still, Reeves could do enough to force Minnesota to change to its two-way players before the regular season begins. If not, Reeves could begin the season with the Iowa Wolves in the G League.
