Donte DiVincenzo’s recent injury update keeps getting stranger. On Wednesday, it was announced that DiVincenzo would miss EuroBasket due to a recurring toe injury. DiVincenzo was originally slated to play for Team Italy after being granted Italian citizenship earlier this month. Italian basketball representative Gigi Datome mentioned this injury will entail a three to four month therapy process.

“On 21 July, we received clearance from the (Timberwolves),” Datome said. “Donte was resuming training, but between 22 and 23 July, he felt discomfort in his big toe, which had already cost him a month out this season. We set a deadline yesterday, and according to doctors and specialists, we were talking about three to four months of therapy, so it wasn’t possible. He sent the video to show that we were on the same page. That’s how it went.”

With three to four months of therapy, Datome’s update is certainly concerning, and it could very well jeopardize the start of the season for DiVincenzo. However, trusted Minnesota Timberwolves reporter Jon Krawczynski said the Wolves see this as a precaution and that DiVincenzo will be ready to go for the start of the season.

Datome’s comments should certainly concern Wolves fans. Regardless, Krawczynski’s comments and the Wolves’ mindset should give fans a sense of optimism, especially since he notes that DiVincenzo should be ready for training camp.

DiVincenzo’s blend of shot creation, outside shooting, and playmaking makes him a key part of the Wolves' title hopes. He averaged 11.7 points while shooting 39.7 percent from beyond the arc. With Nickeil Alexander-Walker leaving free agency, DiVincenzo could be even more important to the team this season.

It's unclear how serious DiVincenzo's injury is

At this stage, it’s hard to know what’s true for sure. Perhaps both things are correct; DiVincenzo will get therapy for months while still being healthy enough to start the season. Alternatively, three to four months could be a high-end estimate, and DiVincenzo could need less time to recover and go through therapy. It’s also possible that Datome’s comments hold true and DiVincenzo misses the start of the season.

However, based on Krawczynski’s comments, the Wolves don’t seem concerned, which is undoubtedly a positive sign. Whatever the case might be, the Wolves must ensure that DiVincenzo is fully healthy before he returns to the court. If that means he misses some time as a precaution, so be it. DiVincenzo missed 19 games this past season with a toe injury, and he has already reaggravated this injury. The absolute worst-case scenario is that DiVincenzo gets injured once more and ultimately needs surgery.

The Wolves are a smart organization and wouldn’t put DiVincenzo in a bad position. Fans should trust the Wolves to make the right decision. Given Krawczynski’s comments, there appears to be significant hope that DiVincenzo will be healthy before the start of the season despite this injury scare.

Nevertheless, this is a developing story, and things can change quickly. Expect further clarity as the season moves closer. Hopefully, the belief that this injury is simply a precaution is true.
