Donte DiVincenzo's future with the Timberwolves is set in stone after LaMelo Ball trade

Donte is primed to stay in Minnesota and that's the right call.

After the Minnesota Timberwolves traded for LaMelo Ball, it was fair to wonder if they would pursue further roster changes. The team went from badly needing a guard to badly needing a forward with Naz Reid and Julius Randle now on new teams.

With the arrival of another guard, one had to wonder if this could mean Donte DiVincenzo could be on the move, who has previously been in trade rumors this summer. Following the trade, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic confirmed that further moves are likely for the Wolves, but DiVincenzo will be staying put.

It's unclear if DiVincenzo will play next year following his Achilles injury and the Wolves have bolstered their guard depth. Furthermore, his $12.5 million expiring contract is a movable deal that could help the Wolves land an impact player. However, trading an injured player feels morally dubious and DiVincenzo has been a crucial part of Minnesota's success since his arrival in 2024.

Even if DiVincenzo is out for the season, his leadership is vital for this team. When considering all of this, the Wolves are making the right call by keeping DiVincenzo around.

The Timberwolves can keep Donte DiVincenzo and upgrade their roster

Krawczynski saying that more moves are to come is notable. At this point, I would be surprised if the Wolves made a blockbuster trade. Nevertheless, re-routing Josh Green (who was quietly acquired in the Ball trade) could be a reasonable pathway to upgrade the roster and their now glaring need for a power forward. Perhaps they could even trade Terrence Shannon Jr. to fill this need.

The Wolves could also look to go bargain shopping in free agency to address this need. Point being: Minnesota has other avenues to upgrading its roster without trading Donte.

When DiVincenzo returns (whenever that might be), his blend of 3-point shooting and general connectivity will allow him to make a positive impact as he did in the previous two seasons with Minnesota. This skill set allows DiVincenzo to be a seamless fit with any roster.

Frankly, in the modern NBA, you can't have too many guards and outside shooters, especially when you are trying to topple the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. To this end, keeping Donte around makes a lot of sense, even with LaMelo's arrival.

Ultimately, while I'm intrigued to see how Minnesota will round out its roster, there's no doubt in my mind that keeping DiVincenzo is the right call.
