With just about 24 hours until the NBA Trade Deadline, there's plenty of uncertainty around the Minnesota Timberwolves. Of course, all eyes are on the Wolves possibly landing Giannis Antetokounmpo. In any event, it looks like Donte DiVincenzo will remain with the team past Thursday. Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic mentioned that he doesn't believe DiVincenzo is going anywhere.
Things can change in a heartbeat this time of year. That said:
— Jon Krawczynski (@JonKrawczynski) February 4, 2026
- I don't have any indications that Donte DiVincenzo is going anywhere.
- There continues to be skepticism that MLW actually would move Giannis this week.
- Wolves remain in those talks, and others for bench depth
Of course, as Krawczynski notes, things can change quickly -- but it sure sounds like DiVincenzo is staying put.
Whether the Wolves trade for Giannis or not, keeping DiVincenzo makes a ton of sense. If you trade for Giannis, keeping some 3-point shooting and playmaking is logical. Furthermore, Giannis and DiVincenzo were teammates with the Bucks, including during their 2021 championship run, so their familiarity is beneficial.
In the scenario that the Wolves strike out on a Giannis trade, they feel primed to upgrade their guard depth. Nevertheless, the Wolves would likely trade Rob Dillingham to make such a move.
Trading DiVincenzo is unlikely to net the Wolves a better player -- and his impact has been immense this season. There's simply no reason to trade him, and amid a period of possible upheaval, Wolves fans should be delighted that The Big Ragu is staying put.
DiVincenzo's importance to the team is undeniable
DiVincenzo earned a spot in the starting lineup just before the start of the year, and he's performed wonderfully. On the season, he is averaging 13.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, on 41.9/38.8/75.9 shooting splits. These numbers don't do DiVincenzo's impact justice, though.
He's most known for his knockdown 3-point shooting, but DiVincenzo's connective playmaking opens up the Wolves' offense. On the other end of the floor, DiVincenzo is a fantastic defensive playmaker who gives the Wolves some much-needed toughness and energy every night. DiVincenzo notably ranks in the 82nd percentile for deflections per 100 possessions according to Databallr.
On/off numbers aren't perfect, but it's far from a coincidence that DiVincenzo's plus-7.5 net on/off swing leads the team per Cleaning the Glass. DiVincenzo has also been a fantastic leader for the Wolves. Simply put, he's vital to the team's success in every way.
Making just $11.9 million this season, DiVincenzo is one of the league's best value contracts. As such, you can (presumably) make a Giannis trade without including DiVincenzo, and again, it's difficult to find a guard who you could swap for him that is a clear upgrade should the Wolves not land the two-time MVP.
The Timberwolves might have to say goodbye to some fan favorites in the next 24 hours, especially if they trade for Giannis -- but all signs point to DiVincenzo staying, and that's undoubtedly a positive thing.
