Earlier this week, it was announced that Jaden McDaniels would be sidelined with a "week-to-week" knee injury. Needless to say, that's a concerning sign for the Minnesota Timberwolves as the playoffs near. The good news is that, according to The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski, “This timeline appears to be geared entirely toward getting him ready to go for the playoffs.”
At the surface level this seems promising, and McDaniels seems likely to return for the playoffs. Regardless, it's fair to have concerns with McDaniels' availability and possible impact if he returns.
Of course, the worst-case scenario would be that McDaniels isn't ready for the playoffs, which would essentially doom the Wolves in a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers or Denver Nuggets. Even if McDaniels does return, we can't be sure that he will be his normal elite self.
Leading up to the playoffs, Wolves fans will be on pins and needles waiting for an update on McDaniels. He is simply so important to their success on both ends of the floor.
McDaniels' health will determine the Timberwolves' ceiling
With each passing day, it looks more and more likely that the Wolves will face off against the Lakers or Nuggets. Frankly, McDaniels is essential to the Wolves' success in any series, but in the context of a matchup with the Lakers and Nuggets, there's no understating his value.
McDaniels would serve as the primary defender against Luka Doncic or Jamal Murray. He's had a significant amount of success against both players. If McDaniels is out entirely, Ayo Dosunmu will take over as the primary on-ball stopper. While he's clearly a positive defender, he's not the elite defender that McDaniels is.
And if McDaniels' play is limited in any way by his injury, that could be problematic. Unfortunately, this is a realistic possibility given how lower-body injury can affect lateral quickness.
On the other side of the ball, the Wolves need McDaniels' extra shot creation and three-level scoring. He is enjoying a career season, averaging 14.8 points, while netting 42.1 percent of his 3-point attempts. In a playoff setting, especially, the Wolves will need McDaniels to lessen the load on Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle. Plus, throughout his career, McDaniels has proven that he can rise to the occasion in the playoffs.
As noted, McDaniels' injury persisting into the playoffs or him not being at 100 percent would nearly guarantee a first-round exit for the Wolves. The flip side is that if McDaniels is healthy, the Timberwolves could make their third straight conference finals and perhaps get over the championship hump. Regardless, that's a massive question mark.
Ultimately, McDaniels' health is one of the main swing factors that could determine the Timberwolves' playoff ceiling.
