NBA preseason overreactions are a dangerous game. Undoubtedly, these games mean nothing in the long run. Nevertheless, sometimes preseason games hint at a trend that could continue into the season. During the offseason, two former Minnesota Timberwolves players, Josh Minott and Luka Garza, signed with the Boston Celtics.

After barely playing with the Wolves, expectations were low. During three seasons with the Wolves, Garza averaged just 6.3 minutes, and Minott averaged 5.0 minutes. Regardless, it was clear that both players would have more of an opportunity on a snake-bitten Celtics squad. It's just one preseason game against an undermanned Memphis Grizzlies, but both Minott and Garza looked stellar.

Minott posted eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a block. His defensive activity and hustle stood out. Garza posted 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Iowa product displayed his impressive self-creation ability.

Minott would give the Celtics a nice spark off the bench

Preseason or not, it's clear that both players will have significant opportunities with the Celtics, and this game is a positive sign. With Jayson Tatum sidelined for the majority, if not all of the season, Minott has a clear path to earning wing minutes. He will be competing with Jordan Walsh, Baylor Scheierman, and Hugo González for these minutes.

However, if Minott plays like he did during Wednesday's preseason game, he'll earn consistent minutes. Minott's defense really stood out. On the ball, he was shutting down the Grizzlies' guards and wings. Off the ball, he was constantly moving around the court, playing the passing lanes and rotating to get stops. Minott constantly crashed the glass on both ends of the floor, and he also cut nicely on offense. All eight of his points came around the rim.

The Memphis product can undoubtedly give the Celtics a nice spark off the bench. Minott's impressive defensive playmaking is nothing new to Wolves fans; he notably ranked in the 100th percentile for blocks per 100 possessions last season, per DataBaller. He still needs to work on his 3-point shot; the career 33.9 percent outside shooter went 0-5 from beyond the arc on Wednesday.

Garza has a clear path to minutes in a wide open Celtics' center rotation

After trading Kristaps Porziņģis, losing Al Horford, and Luke Kornet in free agency, the Celtics' center rotation is wide open. Neemias Queta projects to be the starting center, with Chris Boucher likely serving as a primary backup. Still, a lot can change, and Garza is likely to get some real minutes, especially if he plays like he did on Wednesday.

Getting to the line nine times, Garza showed his willingness to attack the rim and ball-handling chops. Something that will benefit him in Joe Mazzulla's system. Garza even had an impressive deceleration euro step. He also constantly crashed the boards on both ends of the floor.

Garza's screening both on pick-and-rolls and off-ball was central to his impact as well. This will open up the pick-and-roll game for the Celtics and benefit Boston's shooters. It's not far-fetched to say that Garza is already the team's best screener.

While Garza's defense looked solid during Wednesday's preseason game, he'll still need to show more consistency on that end of the floor. Ultimately, though, both Garza and Minott have a strong chance to earn minutes with the Celtics.
