Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Joan Beringer shined in his summer league debut, pouring in 11 points, eight rebounds, and six blocks. However, before playing in the summer league, Beringer was asked about the biggest adjustment to the NBA; he talked about the intensity and speed of the game.

“Practice here is really more intense. The intensity is just different, everything is faster,” Beringer said

While Beringer was specifically talking about practice, it’s fair to believe that this would translate to game settings, especially relating to the speed of the game. Given how dominant Beringer was in his summer league debut, it’s worth wondering what he will look like when the game starts to slow down for him. That should be a scary thought for the rest of the league.

Beringer will only get better

The idea of the game slowing down for rookies and younger players is often when they find their true groove in the NBA. Beringer certainly looked comfortable with the speed of the NBA game. However, his processing abilities will only further develop with more reps.

Beringer’s shot blocking and rim protection are his main strengths, and once the game slows down for him more, he’ll only get better. He already shows extreme proficiency in reading the opposing offensive players' next moves and timing blocks. Yet, this skill will only improve, and he could ultimately become one of the league’s best defenders. Playing behind Rudy Gobert will also help Beringer develop, and he is primed to be Gobert’s eventual successor.

Offensively, his ability to catch lobs and set screens is already evident. With more reps, Beringer will find more ways to make an impact as a screener and could develop as a scorer outside of the rim. Beringer displayed a great feel for the game in his summer league debut, including throwing a dazzling full-court outlet pass. As Beringer develops, he could become a threat as a high-post passer.

The game slowing down will certainly benefit Beringer on both ends of the floor. Nevertheless, it will most notably result in his offensive growth.

While Beringer’s summer league debut was impressive, it’s important to note he’s not even close to his full potential. With his previous quote and his age in mind, Beringer is poised to develop further. At 18 years old, his upside on both ends of the court is immense. Overall, it looks like the Wolves found an absolute gem with the 17th pick.
