The Minnesota Timberwolves have an interesting offseason ahead of them, and it seems as though Julius Randle could be on the trade block. Anthony Edwards reportedly isn’t thrilled with the state of Minnesota’s roster, and the Wolves could make some moves as a result. For the second time in three years, Randle could be traded for a better offensive option, just like in the Karl-Anthony Towns deal.
When the New York Knicks traded Randle to the Wolves for Towns, they did so in order to add more offensive talent alongside Jalen Brunson. Now look at them. They are in the NBA Finals. Edwards needs Minnesota to make a similar move with Randle, providing him with a more consistent offensive option.
Ironically, Randle is about to be traded for the same exact reason.
Julius Randle could be traded for improved offense (again)
During the playoffs this year, Randle just didn’t give the Wolves enough consistency on the offensive end. He was inefficient and didn’t end up supporting Edwards as much as they needed him to.
It was a similar story when Randle was on the Knicks. He was great for them at times, but ultimately, they decided to trade him away to get a better offensive option in Towns.
And again, that move paid dividends. Not only did they make the Eastern Conference finals in Towns’ first year in New York, but now, they are in the NBA Finals, up 2-1 on the San Antonio Spurs.
Obviously, the Wolves made two straight conference finals themselves, one of which was with Randle on the roster. But if they want to get over the hump, it feels like a move may be necessary.
Edwards needs more offensive support. Randle and Rudy Gobert are two of the highest-paid players on the roster, and neither is super consistent on the offensive end (especially Gobert).
So, as the Timberwolves consider different pathways toward improvement this summer, it seems as though Randle and Gobert could be on the chopping block.
Minnesota should be on the hunt for a guy who can take some of the pressure off Edwards on the offensive end, much like when the Dallas Mavericks traded Kyrie Irving to help Luka Doncic.
Randle is one of the Wolves’ best trade pieces from a financial perspective, especially since they probably won’t be trading Jaden McDaniels or Naz Reid.
So, for the second time in three years, it seems as though Randle is going to be traded so his team can have more consistent offensive production.
