Key area of growth for Joan Beringer could be a game-changer for him and the Timberwolves

Joan Beringer needs to defend without fouling. Thankfully, he showed promise in this area during his first summer league game as a second-year player.

Second-year big man Joan Beringer is filled with potential. With Julius Randle and Naz Reid on new teams, he'll have a chance to play some real minutes in the 2026-27 season. As you would expect from any 19-year-old, though, there's some room for Beringer to grow.

The most notable area of growth for the French big man is defensive discipline and staying out of foul trouble-- as a rookie, he averaged 5.4 fouls per 36 minutes. While making an appearance on Amazon Prime's broadcast, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch spoke about this area of growth.

"We love the raw talent, the athleticism. He's (Beringer) developing feel fast for a young player who came to the game late. The key for him is going to be foul trouble. You know, staying out of foul trouble. Kind of tempering his aggressiveness so he's not always putting himself in harm's way when it comes to foul trouble. We are expecting a step forward for him, and the way we are currently constructed, there's a really important role for him," Finch said.

I think this is a perfect assessment from Finchy. Beringer pops off the screen when watching games thanks to his athletic gifts. This allows him to excel at protecting the rim, rebounding, and as a lob threat. Still, Beringer can be a bit block-happy at times and makes some unnecessary gambles, which lead to fouls.

Barring any roster changes, Beringer will have a sizable role in the Wolves' rotation. How impactful his minutes will be, though, will in part hinge on his defensive discipline.

Joan Beringer becoming a more disciplined defender could be a game-changer

As Beringer earns a bigger role, this part of his game needs to be ironed out. The positive spin here is that if Beringer can improve this area, he can be a highly impactful two-way big man.

At his best, Beringer can be an elite rim deterrent who doesn't just block shots but alters players' mindsets when attacking the rim. Unfortunately, if he continues to be a foul-prone player like he was as a rookie, he won't reach this level.

Regardless of his athletic gifts and ability to block shots, if Beringer is known as a foul-prone player, opposing teams will feel comfortable attacking the rim, knowing that it could result in a trip to the charity stripe. On a simpler note, this problem limits how much he can play on a nightly basis.

The bright side is that Beringer's first summer league game as a sophomore player showcased clear improvement in this area. He recorded just two fouls in 25 minutes of play. Beringer produced at a high level, recording 18 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Beringer's timing on his blocked shots really stood out, and this helped him stay out of foul trouble. Furthermore, his high motor and mobility, guarding smaller players when needed, were highlights of his defensive performance.

On the other side of the ball, Beringer showed a ton of comfort putting the ball on the floor and finding ways to score outside of simply rolling to the rim. Without a doubt, this is a promising sign for his ability to handle a bigger role.

Having a big man off the bench with this combination of offensive skill, athleticism and defense would be a major boost to the Timberwolves' offense.

While Thursday's summer league game is promising, Beringer still needs to show that he can improve in these areas in the regular season.

It's easy to be optimistic about Beringer's upcoming season and general upside, but growth in the defensive discipline department is something Timberwolves fans should keep a close eye on. When it's all said and done, Beringer's development in this area could determine just how big of a role he earns.
