If the Cleveland Cavaliers get swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals, then the Minnesota Timberwolves should call about an Evan Mobley trade. Maybe the Cavs would want to run it back, but there’s a real shot they decide to seriously shake things up. And if they do, a Mobley trade could be enticing for the Wolves.

Minnesota would still need to add a bit more offensive help alongside Anthony Edwards. But pivoting from one of Julius Randle or Rudy Gobert and adding Mobley would certainly be intriguing. Mobley isn’t the best offensive player, but he’s an elite defender and a bit more versatile than Gobert.

It could be a sneaky, yet effective, idea for the Wolves to explore.

Timberwolves could inquire about an Evan Mobley trade

Mobley is one of the best defenders in the NBA today. Bringing him on board would ensure that the Wolves maintain their place as one of the best defensive teams in the NBA.

He’s not the best offensive player, but he certainly has more offensive versatility than Gobert. That would be an upgrade for the Wolves at the big-man position.

In fact, adding Mobley could allow the Timberwolves to bring Naz Reid into the starting lineup. Mobley’s defense next to Reid’s offense would create one of the more dynamic frontcourts in the league.

Trading for Mobley wouldn’t be easy. It may take a three-team deal to get the job done, as the Cavaliers already have Jarrett Allen, so Gobert may not be ideal, and Julius Randle may not be a great fit for them.

That said, the Wolves should at least try to start a dialogue. Mobley is a heck of a player, and his defensive impact with additional versatility could seriously help shake things up in Minnesota. Plus, he works perfectly with Edwards’ timeline from an age perspective.

Perhaps a deal could be struck where Gobert goes to a third team, and the Cavs get another star or other assets in return as part of a three-team trade.

Regardless, at least asking the Cavaliers about Mobley would be smart for the Wolves, especially if they get swept by the Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals.

Because if that happens, there’s a real chance Cleveland looks to shake up its roster this summer. And there’s no guarantee Mobley wouldn’t be part of those shake-ups.

Mobley and Edwards would make for a very intriguing pairing in Minnesota moving forward.
