Despite pulling off a gutsy 112-96 win and taking a commanding 3-1 lead over the Denver Nuggets, Saturday night was filled with sadness for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Donte DiVincenzo's torn Achilles caused everyone to be hit with a wave of sadness in the first quarter, and then things got worse as Anthony Edwards left the game with a hyperextended knee in the second quarter.
Edwards missed 11 of the Wolves' 14 final games with a "runner's knee" injury in his right knee, and he is dealing with an injury to his opposite knee.
Shams Charania noted that he is set to undergo tests on his injured left knee. After the game, Chris Finch said that he doesn't know anything definitive about Edwards yet. This lack of clarity has everyone on pins and needles. All we can do is wait and hope for the best.

It's unclear how serious Anthony Edwards' injury is
Sports medicine doctor Brian Sutterer noted that there's a chance this is a severe injury, such as an ACL and PCL tear, but also mentioned it's always difficult to evaluate how severe hyperextensions are. Sutterer did say, that he would be shocked if Edwards returned to this series. Thus, it's clear that there are wide range of outcomes at play.
Giannis Antetokounmpo recovered miraculously quickly from a hyper-extended knee injury in the 2021 playoffs. He missed just two games in the Eastern Conference finals and later returned to lead the Bucks to a championship. As such, this gives everyone some level of hope.
Nevertheless, there's an unfortunate chance that Ant's injury could be far more severe. Undoubtedly, everyone is anxiously awaiting further updates about Edwards and hoping that he has avoided the worst-case scenario.
If tonight's game and this series have taught us anything, it's that the Wolves can never be fully discounted. They are up 3-1 despite many discounting their chances against the Nuggets, and heroically pulled off a win despite two key players suffering injuries.
However, in the unfortunate event that Edwards' injury falls on the severe side, the Wolves will face a difficult path to making another deep playoff run. When it's all said and done, injuries could, unfortunately, derail the Wolves' season. Beyond that, in the awful scenario that Edwards' injury is severe, next season the Wolves could face a difficult trajectory.
Whenever there is further news on Ant, we'll keep readers updated.
More importantly, though, we are wishing Edwards and DiVincenzo safe and speedy recoveries.
