5 Free agents Timberwolves should avoid at all costs

3. Cameron Payne
When it comes to the Timberwolves' backcourt, it is clear that more shooting ability is needed. To begin last season, Minnesota employed the likes of Shake Milton and Troy Brown Jr., hoping they would bring some consistent shot-making and floor-spacing off the bench. When that did not pan out, the next obvious move was to make a trade at the deadline.
Management did just that, bringing in Monte Morris as a backup point guard. But his addition turned out to be one of President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly's only misses during his tenure, and it appears likely the team will move on from him this summer. As such, a replacement of some kind will be needed.
Unfortunately, a player like Cam Payne is the opposite of what Minnesota should be looking for. While he is a good shooter, Payne is undersized and would likely run into some of the same issues Morris did in terms of being unreliable on defense and not bringing much scoring power to the table outside of catch-and-shoot jumpers. Now, Cam would be affordable as he was paid just above the veteran minimum this past season. But there are simply better options out there.
