Kevin Durant has extremely fitting nickname for Anthony Edwards
By Will Eudy
Over the course of Team USA's Olympic gold medal run in July and August, Minnesota Timberwolves fans saw Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant grow even closer than they were before. We already knew that Ant was a massive fan of the all-time great scorer, but their bond appeared to significantly strengthen while sharing the United States national team locker room.
The pair came up with their own custom handshake, and they repeatedly said nice things about each other to the media. Now, with the Olympics in the rearview, we have another piece of evidence that points to Durant and Edwards becoming more connected.
This past week, both KD and Ant attended the Fanatics Fan Fest in New York City, an event that brought together fans across many different sports to celebrate fandom as a whole. The event took place at the Javits Center in Manhattan. While there, Durant was asked about what it was like sharing the floor with Edwards. He of course responded positively, and added that he calls Ant "the baby GOAT."
KD calls Edwards "baby GOAT"
This is of course an affectionate nickname for one of the brightest young stars in the NBA. Edwards and the Timberwolves may have taken down Durant's Suns in the 2024 playoffs, but KD loves basketball enough to give credit where due.
Here, his statement of "baby GOAT" seems to be a direct reference to the many (admittedly ambitious) comparisons between Minnesota's star and Michael Jordan. Of course, many still consider MJ the greatest player of all-time, or GOAT. So KD is acknowledging Ant's status as a transcendent young superstar.
It is still probably too early to call Edwards the next Michael Jordan. But one thing is for sure, and that is that comments like this one from Durant will only seek to further grow the rumors that he could become a Timberwolf in the near future.
