Mike Greenberg tells Timberwolves fans what they want to hear about Edwards
By Will Eudy
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about Anthony Edwards. Not just for fans of the Minnesota Timberwolves, but for all those who love basketball and enjoy seeing a next-generation star grow and rise in real time. Going back to before he was drafted, not many saw Ant getting to the point he is currently at.
Leading up to draft night in 2020, there were plenty of questions surrounding Edwards, and many wondered if he was truly number one pick material. There were debates about how truly committed to the game of basketball he was, and rumors of teams passing on him were widespread. Ant was far from a unanimous, unquestioned top pick.
But everything he has shown us since then has been concrete proof that his talent is far more expansive than the pre-draft process would have told us. Edwards has grown into a three-level scorer, high-level defender, and has been key in transforming the Timberwolves from a Western Conference bottom-feeder into one of its most promising contenders.
Among the most impressive parts of his growth has been how he has grown into a strong leader, which has enabled Minnesota to rise to the level they are currently performing at. Once just a passionate and goofy rookie who was always having a good time, Ant has become a laser-focused leader who has learned how to have his team rally around him.
Greenberg says Ant will be the next young star to win a championship
It is his steady growth and increasing productivity that has put him into some very exclusive NBA conversations. Edwards is widely regarded as one of the best players under 25 years old in the league, and the Timberwolves' progression to the level of a true contender has put Ant into even more prestigious discussions.
This week, ESPN analyst Mike Greenberg revealed his personal list of the next young superstars that will win an NBA championship. Greeny ambitiously placed Edwards at the top of his list, with Minnesota's franchise star followed by Jalen Brunson, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, and Victor Wembanyama in order.
Wolves fans have always been extremely confident in Ant's talent, so for him to be seen so highly as this has to feel extremely validating. Many would argue several of the players listed below Edwards here are better overall players. Whether that is true or not, the fact that more and more people are seeing Minnesota and Edwards as top title threats is very telling.
If Greeny's list ends up being accurate, that would mean Ant and the Timberwolves could end up as champions as soon as next season. That would of course be a dream come true for fans in Minnesota, and yet, at the same time, it is the outcome they have been slowly building toward over these last four years.
