Playing without star center Karl Anthony-Towns, the Minnesota Timberwolves have remained within striking distance of the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. Minnesota is 6-3 without Towns and started its three-game home stand with wins over the Cleveland Cavaliers (104-91) and Golden State Warriors (114-110).

Minnesota is a monster home favorite Wednesday night against the Detroit Pistons.

Detroit is back to the cellar of the Eastern Conference with the NBA’s worst record. The Pistons have dropped seven consecutive games, six of them by at least 13 points. Detroit hung around against Minnesota back in January (a 124-117 loss), can they do the same as a double-digit underdog in Minneapolis?

Here’s the betting breakdown of the matchup with a best bet.

Pistons vs. Timberwolves key players to watch

Detroit Pistons

James Wiseman: The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Wiseman is averaging just 7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game this season but has turned in three solid performances in a row. In that stretch, Wiseman has scored 53 points and 31 rebounds and has notched back-to-back double-doubles. He finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds in Monday’s 124-99 loss to the Knicks.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Naz Reid: The 6-foot-9 center is getting an increased workload with Towns sidelined. Reid, who averages 13.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, has finished with a double-double in two of the last four games. He had 20 points and 12 rebounds in Sunday’s win over Golden State.

Pistons vs. Timberwolves prediction and pick

If there’s been a bright spot to Detroit’s season thus far, it’s been the Piston’s offensive ability to explode on certain nights. However, Detroit has slipped to No. 26 in net offensive rating during a streak of playing some of the league’s top defenses.

Detroit hasn’t scored more than 103 points over its seven-game losing streak and now could be without its top scorer in Cunningham (22.1 points per game) against the NBA’s best defense in the tenacious Timberwolves. Minnesota, No. 1 in net defensive rating, also leads the NBA in scoring defense while giving up just 103.2 points per game at home. That’s bad news for a Pistons’ offense that is 25th in the NBA in shooting percentage over its last three games.

Minnesota can ill-afford to drop a game with how competitive the Western Conference is this season. The Timberwolves’ offense has question marks with Edwards and Gobert carrying questionable tags, but both players logged full games in Sunday’s win over Golden State and are trending toward suiting up against Detroit, which gives up 122.2 points per game on the road. Don’t be afraid of the large lumber Minnesota has to lay at home Wednesday. Take the Timberwolves in a route.
