The Minnesota Timberwolves were bashed when they traded for Rudy Gobert. How will the spacing work? Why did the Timberwolves give up so much? Those were just a few of the questions that were asked when the trade went down.
Obviously, the first year didn't work out nearly as well as everyone hoped it would. The Timberwolves finished 42-40 with a first-round exit that saw the Denver Nuggets winning 4-1.
Now, the trade is starting to pay off. Gobert is one of the best, if not the best, defenders in the league, and the Timberwolves have the best defense in the league. A lot of that is because of Gobert, and many of the Wolves' great offensive performances are also because of Gobert.
Even against the Memphis Grizzlies, Gobert continues to surprise the rest of the league. On Friday night, he was able to have yet another historic night. Here is what the Timberwolves' PR team tweeted out after the big win over the Grizzlies:
"Gobert becomes the third player in Timberwolves history with 20+ rebounds in consecutive games: For Gobert, tonight marks his 2nd 10+ point/15+ rebound/5+ block game as a member of the Timberwolves. He joins Kevin Garnett (11) and Karl-Anthony Towns (4) as the only Wolves player with multiple such games."
When you think of all of the great players that have come through the Timberwolves franchise, specifically big men, and to know that Gbert is the third player to have over 20 rebound games, it is impressive. Think about Kevin Garnett, Kevin Love, and even Karl-Aanthony Towns.
Gobert has been playing great this season, and it's no secret he is one of the reasons the Timberwolves' are 17-4. The defense has been insane, the rebounding has been impressive, and the way the team is gelling is great.
Gobert is a big reason this team is being viewed as a contender to win it all.
