The Timberwolves were embarrassed on Monday after falling to the Charlotte Hornets at home on a night where Karl Anthony-Towns set the franchise record with 62 points. Minnesota wasted no time getting the bad taste out of their mouth with a 118-107 road win over the lowly Washington Wizards on Wednesday. That victory fell right on the number (-11) for Minnesota, so should bettors back them as a short-road favorite Thursday night at Barclays Center?

The Nets were 15-15 after beating the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 26. Since then, Brooklyn’s been in free fall, losing 11 of 13 and six of its last seven games. The Nets are just 1-4 at home over their prolonged losing streak and are coming off a 108-103 loss to the Knicks. Should you back them as home underdogs on Thursday?

Here’s the betting preview for the cross-conference matchup and a best bet.

Timberwolves vs. Nets key players to watch

Anthony Edwards: Edwards is 14th in the NBA in scoring this season but had one of his worst shooting performances in the loss to Charlotte, going 3-of-11 from the floor and finishing with 9 points. That wouldn’t last long as Edwards poured in 34 points Wednesday against the Wizards despite shooting just 11-of-28 (39.3%). He worked his way to the free-throw line, going 13-of-14. Edwards is just 6-of-24 from beyond the arc over his last four games.

Nic Claxton: The 6-foot-11 center is creeping toward the top 10 in the NBA in rebounding (10.3) after a season-high 17 boards in the loss to the Knicks on Tuesday. Claxton has six double-doubles in his last nine games and Brooklyn’s only two wins this month have been when he puts up 20 or more points.

Timberwolves vs. Nets prediction and pick

The home underdog role hasn’t produced profitable results for Brooklyn backers this season as the Nets are just 4-6-1 in this spot. Brooklyn’s offense has been led by Mikal Bridges, but the Nets could be in serious trouble offensively if forward Cameron Johnson (shoulder) can’t suit up due to the shoulder issue. Johnson and Mikal Bridges (36 points) were Brooklyn’s only two starters in double figures against the Knicks.

Minnesota is a team built on its defense with the No. 1 defensive rating in the NBA (108.8), but both of these teams are bullies near the basket and rank top-5 in the NBA defensively in allowing points in the paint.

While the under would be a lean given the defenses, it’s hard to back the Nets given their recent slide. Since beating Oklahoma City, the Nets have covered just once in seven contests while the Timberwolves are 6-3 ATS in their last nine. After losing back-to-back games at home, Minnesota needs to stack up wins on this road trip against sub-par teams to keep pace for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. They already did that against the Wizards on Wednesday and they should continue it in Brooklyn by covering this short number.
