The presence of veterans in the NBA may have diminished in recent years, but that does not mean that the value of having them on a roster has. As it currently stands, one of the only remaining needs for the Minnesota Timberwolves' roster is a backup ball-handling guard.
After the team parted ways with Jordan McLaughlin and Monte Morris, the Timberwolves are a bit thin at point guard. Mike Conley is a rock-solid starter next to Anthony Edwards in the backcourt. From there, Rob Dillingham comes in with a steady skillset that should allow him to contribute at a high level from the jump.
But at the same time, Minnesota will not want to rely too heavily on a rookie while they pursue a championship. They will likely want to look at signing a veteran point guard on a minimum deal. With that in mind, there is one player who becomes an excellent fit for the job: John Wall.
John Wall has a connection to the Timberwolves
Recently, we saw Wall appear on ESPN during the Timberwolves' latest Summer League game. He gave commentary during the game and shared that he has a connection with the Timberwolves. According to the five-time All-Star, John has known Rob Dillingham since seventh grade and saw him compete while playing for coach Jeff McInnis at Combine Academy in North Carolina.
As a current mentor to Rob, it would make a lot of sense to bring Wall to Minnesota on a minimum-type deal. John has not played in the NBA since the 2022-23 season when he suited up for the LA Clippers, but he explained on the Summer League broadcast that he is actively seeking a return to the league in any way possible. He noted that he is willing to take on the role of just a mentor if needed, not even being set on having a large on-court role.
With that in mind, Wall could be something of an underrated option for the Timberwolves. They are currently seeking out players that can be signed for cheap given their financial situation, and John has explained that he will take any opportunity available to him. Seeing how Dillingham is already under his wing, signing the former star point guard should seem like a no-brainer.
