Proposed Ja Morant trade is something the Timberwolves might have to pass on

Ja Morant is off to a rough start shooting the ball this season and he's not the right fit for the Wolves.

There are some Timberwolves fans who are dreaming of a backcourt pairing featuring Ja Morant and Anthony Edwards. There would be very few, if any, starting backcourts that would have a higher ceiling than them. With many believing that Morant and the Grizzlies are on the outs, Minnesota has been speculated as a team that will look to trade for his services.

Bleacher Report recently posted an article on 1 trade each team should make if the trade deadline was today. The Timberwolves’ deal involves them acquiring Morant.

Here’s how Bleacher Report’s mock trade would go down. Minnesota would be giving up Naz Reid, Donte DiVincenzo, Rob Dillingham, and a 2029 second-round pick in exchange for Morant.

Morant's upside is undeniable but he is struggling this season

Now 26 years old, it isn’t really a debate that Morant is a better player than any lead guard on the Timberwolves roster. The 2019-20 Rookie of the Year is also a two-time All-Star and was named to the All-NBA second team in 2021-22.

Thus far in this season, Morant has really struggled for his shot. He’s never been a knockdown 3-point shooter, but he’s only 10-60 (16.7%) to begin the year. Morant is also averaging a career-high 4.0 turnovers.

Many believe his play will improve with a change of scenery. There is clearly a disconnect between Morant and the Grizzlies’ coaching staff. Playing alongside Ant-Man would probably allow Morant to be excited to play basketball again after previously stating that the joy is missing.

Depth would be tested if deal were to be made

What would be difficult about making this deal is that the Timberwolves don’t exactly have a roster featuring 11 or 12 guys that Chris Finch feels comfortable playing. So trading three that are part of the rotation (although Dillingham isn't necessarily entrenched in their rotation) for one piece back is always going to test the depth.

The deal would have Morant replacing the departing DiVincenzo in the starting lineup. No question that’s a more dynamic starting five.

Now, the bench would lose the 2023-24 Sixth Man of the Year winner in Reid. The two guys that Finch would seem to trust off his bench would be Mike Conley and Jaylen Clark if this deal were made. Terrence Shannon Jr. could be another, but he’s missed the last four games and hasn’t performed well since the season opener.

Likely, Bones Hyland would re-enter the rotation. Losing their backup big in Reid, Finch would probably be forced to use rookie Joan Beringer, and it’s not exactly clear if he’s yet ready for extended playing time.

The Timberwolves could still make an additional move to bolster the bench, but it’s just something to think about if Minnesota were to trade multiple players and receive one back in return. Keep in mind, Morant has also had his share of ailments throughout his career (as well as suspensions), and he missed the Grizzlies' game on Wednesday with an ankle injury.
