It has already been a thrilling summer for Minnesota Timberwolves fans this offseason. Trading for LaMelo Ball allows them to dream of a high-octane offense featuring one of the top backcourts in the league. Re-signing Ayo Dosunmu brings back someone who became a beloved member of the team after just a couple of months.
Trading away Naz Reid definitely stung for how much he meant to the city, but it stings a little less knowing he helped bring in Ball. Dealing Julius Randle was met with little heartache, as much of the fanbase wanted him gone after his miserable series against the San Antonio Spurs.
The Wolves are just one free agent signing away from having what would probably be their best summer in franchise history. Getting LeBron James to come to Minneapolis would mean so much to the city, while also boosting their chances of reaching their first-ever NBA Finals. There haven't been any reports of the Timberwolves being eliminated as a potential option, so fans will keep believing until they are told not to.
Bringing in LeBron would make this summer better than all others for the WolvesÂ
The Timberwolves have never been a top suitor for big-name free agents to join them throughout their 37-year existence. It surely doesn’t help that the winters are quite cold, and the team's history lacks much success until recently. Since the days of Kirby Puckett in the early 1990s, the state of Minnesota has been waiting for one of its major men's sports teams to bring home a title.
Remarkably, the most notable free agent they may have signed in their history is Joe Smith. Yes, that Joe Smith whose 'wink-wink' deals with Minnesota cost the team three first-round draft picks. Even if he is turning 42 years old in December, LeBron is obviously in another stratosphere than Smith.
Just knowing that a superstar player chose their team would easily make this the best summer the team has ever had. There’s no way of knowing for sure, but perhaps LeBron coming will make other future free agents think longer about if they too should sign with the Wolves.
Minnesota got the star point guard they have been pining for in Ball. Now, adding arguably the best player in NBA history would make excitement for next season go up tenfold. The letdown if LeBron goes elsewhere (the Timberwolves aren’t seen as a favorite) will be large, but it can’t be forgotten that the ceiling for this team has still seemingly risen.
