Vibes are currently low for the Minnesota Timberwolves, both among the fanbase and the national media. Admittedly, after losing in the playoffs, the dialogue is never all sunshine and rainbows. This is especially the case since three of the Timberwolves' four losses in the second-round were blowouts.
It's fair to wonder how the Wolves will go about building a better roster around Anthony Edwards. Minnesota needs to find him a high-end second option and improve the overall spacing around him.
There's no denying their high payroll and lack of draft capital will make things challenging.
Nevertheless, in the wake of Minnesota's second-round loss, I've seen too many people saying that the Wolves' title window is closed. This argument is absolutely ridiculous.Â
Let's not forget that Ant-Man is just 24 years old; he'll turn 25 this summer, but he's nowhere close to his peak, and he's already a top-five player. To win a championship, you need a transcendent player like Ant. The Wolves have to improve their surrounding roster, but they already have the most important ingredient for winning a title.
The Timberwolves' title window is still open with Ant turning 25 this summer
It's also not like the Wolves' entire roster around Ant is aging out of title contention. Sure, Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert might be, but what about Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, Terrence Shannon Jr., and Joan Beringer? Of course, Shannon and Beringer aren't nearly as polished as McDaniels and Reid, but they have upside to be long-term contributors.
If the Wolves can land a more dependable second option in exchange for Randle and/or Gobert, they'll be in a great spot. Ideally, this player will better fit Ant's timeline. While that's far from a guarantee, having one older core player doesn't close your title window by any means, especially if the player is talented enough to make up for being older.
The bigger picture is that Minnesota has advanced past the first-round in three straight years and has made two conference finals appearances -- all before their superstar hit his true prime.
It's worth noting that Ant has continued to level up his game, including becoming an elite 3-point shooter in 2024, along with improving his clutch and mid-range scoring this past season. Considering this and how elite Edwards already is, there's no reason not to say their title window has closed.
Without a doubt, the Wolves have their work cut out for them in order to catch up to the almighty Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. However, nobody should lose sight of the fact that they've already had a significant amount of success before Ant's 25th birthday. The Wolves will have to get creative to reach the next level, but make no mistake, with a consistently improving superstar, their title window is open.
