During the Minnesota Timberwolves' media day, general manager Tim Connelly spoke highly of Anthony Edwards. He noted that Anthony Edwards has dedicated himself to the film room and is primed to improve, while mentioning his potential to be an all-time great.
"He's became really addicted to the film room this off-season. His work ethic has always been great but this year was on a whole other level," Connelly said. He followed this up by saying, “We think he’s (Edwards) not only a great player but can be one of the greatest players of all time.”
At 24 years old, it's not far-fetched to say that Edwards is on an all-time great trajectory. Edwards is a consensus top-eight player in the league, and he is a top-five player in many people's eyes. He has already made two Western Conference finals appearances, averaging 26.9 points in the playoffs for his career. Additionally, Edwards has made two All-NBA teams and three All-Star teams. Edwards is clearly dedicated to building off this impressive start to his career and becoming a true all-time great.
Edwards is on an all-time great trajectory
There's a big difference between being one of the best players in the league and becoming an all-time great. Nevertheless, given Edwards' resume at his age, it's fair to believe that he is on an all-time great trajectory, and dedicating himself to the film room will help him reach this level.
Edwards has already made rapid improvements during his ascent to stardom. Most notably, becoming one of the NBA's best shooters last season. During his first four seasons, Edwards shot 35.3 percent on 7.4 3s per game. However, last season, Edwards netted 39.5 percent from beyond the arc and led the league with 320 made 3s.
This summer, Edwards has reportedly focused on improving as a post-up threat and mid-range scorer. These improvements could help Edwards reach another level as a scorer while opening up opportunities for him as a playmaker. With elite athleticism and outside shooting, Edwards is already one of the most prolific scorers in the league, but adding a mid-range game could help him separate himself as the league's best scorer.
The Wolves have surrounded Edwards with impressive talent, including Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert, which has helped the team reach new heights. Likewise, this helps Edwards reach his ceiling as a player and ultimately could help lead to him being remembered as an all-time great.
Minnesota has never won a championship. However, if Edwards can bring the team their first championship, he could be remembered not just as a great Timberwolf but one of the best players in league history.
With Edwards' impressive start to his career, he'll likely remain at least a top-five level player for the next decade-plus. Undoubtedly, this will be paired with team success for the Wolves, and like Connelly said, it could result in Edwards being one of the all-time greats.
