The Minnesota Timberwolves could potentially look to shake things up this summer, and based on the way things ended for the San Antonio Spurs, perhaps they could try to add De’Aaron Fox. Obviously, Fox endured a brutal end to the year in San Antonio, struggling in the NBA Finals, but he’s still an All-Star. And he could fit nicely alongside Anthony Edwards.
There has been a ton of buzz around Fox and his contract over the last couple of days since the Finals ended. A lot of people are dubbing it the worst contract in the NBA. But is it the worst contract? Or is it the worst contract because of the situation? I think the latter. And I think Fox could make sense in Minnesota.
The Wolves should see if there’s a deal to be done.
De'Aaron Fox could be solid co-star for Anthony Edwards
Fox is going to be a controversial name this summer. Some people will hold the weight of the Finals against him in full force. Others may take into account his entire season.
When he’s at his best, Fox is an All-NBA player. He’s a lead point guard capable of running an offense and providing plenty of offensive support to his team. He just struggled in the Finals (and the playoffs).
But one rough playoff run does not define a player. Just because Fox played poorly in the postseason doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. And it doesn’t mean he can’t help a team in the right situation.
The Spurs’ situation just may not be right. They already have Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, so paying Fox as much as they are isn’t ideal. Still, even the Spurs may decide to keep him around and run it back next year. It wouldn’t be surprising at all.
However, if San Antonio does decide to explore the trade market, then the Wolves should definitely get involved. Because Fox could be a great secondary playmaker alongside Edwards.
It would likely have to be a three-team deal, though. San Antonio could rid itself of Fox’s contract, and the Wolves could ship out a combination of Julius Randle and a salary filler to a third team, taking back Fox.
Fox’s ball-handling and scoring would, in theory, pair nicely alongside Edwards, giving him the offensive support he hasn’t had consistently for the last couple of seasons.
Minnesota could roll out a starting lineup of Fox, Edwards, Ayo Dosunmu (if re-signed), Jaden McDaniels, and Rudy Gobert. That’s not a bad five.
Despite all the discourse, Fox could be exactly what Edwards and the Wolves need to take things to the next level.
