In the early part of the season, it really felt like the Minnesota Timberwolves had lost the biggest part of their identity from last year. When the Wolves earned their second-most regular season wins in franchise history and went to the Western Conference Finals for just the second time ever, they did it on the backs of their smothering defensive presence.

The old adage says that defense wins championships, and it was Minnesota's strong defense that got them within three wins of the NBA Finals in May 2024. But when the team was forced to make long-term roster decisions and ended up trading away Karl-Anthony Towns, everything began to change.

Stage one of making this new group work had to be done on the fly. Chris Finch and his staff did not have any kind of offseason to tweak things, with a mere three days standing between the trade and the team's official media day.

That meant that the Timberwolves were in for some struggles. But after Anthony Edwards got honest and called out his teammates and himself, things began to change, seemingly almost overnight. Since that now pivotal moment, Minnesota has gotten back to their winning ways. And unsurprisingly, it has been the renewed energy of their defense that has gotten them there.

The Wolves have been the best defensive team since Thanksgiving

According to the radio voice of the Timberwolves, Alan Horton, Minnesota came into Tuesday at the top of a staggering nine different defensive categories since Thanksgiving. They are: overall defensive rating, halfcourt defensive rating, transition defensive rating, opponent effective field goal percentage, opponent turnover rate, opponent paint points, opponent paint field goal percentage, opponent three-pointers made, and opponent three-point percentage.

With Tuesday marking 19 days since Thanksgiving, that means that a notable amount of time has now passed in order for the Wolves to build up this kind of consistency defensively. This is no longer a small sample size, and we are seeing how Minnesota's defensive prowess has truly come alive once again.

Compared to the rest of the league, the Timberwolves were already performing well defensively even before their winning streak began. As of last Friday, Minnesota had the highest defensive efficiency over the previous 10 games of any team in the NBA. Their two wins since then over the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs have only improved their numbers.

What we are seeing was always the vision coming into this season for the front office. There was probably suspicion that there would be road bumps with this new group, but those in charge always knew the kind of defensive ceiling this group could have.
