Sunday night's loss to the Golden State Warriors probably felt a little strange to Minnesota Timberwolves fans, given how accustomed to winning they have gotten over the last two weeks. The Wolves took home four consecutive wins between November 29 and December 6 while dominating defensively and looking like they were finally getting back on track overall.
It was an extremely encouraging stretch for Minnesota that came after Anthony Edwards got honest in the locker room and called out himself and the entire team for being soft internally. Rather than crumble under the weight of the criticism, the Timberwolves banded together and played their best basketball of the season, giving the fanbase a renewed optimism for what this team can achieve this season.
But every good winning streak has to come to an end, and the Wolves failed to win the second of a two-game road trip to San Francisco. Surrendering a 44-point third quarter to the Dubs, Minnesota could not produce nearly enough offense in the final frame to come back in this one.
In what was a step back from their consistently strong defensive performances over the prior two weeks, the Wolves came out of their trip to the Bay Area with another learning experience. Near the end of Minnesota's win over Golden State on Friday, Anthony Edwards found Rudy Gobert for two dazzling lob dunks. Afterward, Gobert said that "it felt like Christmas" to get gifted those easy buckets by his teammate. However, Sunday was a different story.
Rudy Gobert: "It wasn't Christmas today"
When that result failed to be replicated during the game on Sunday, Timberwolves podcaster Dane Moore asked Gobert about it in the locker room. The Wolves' starting center had a humorous response. "It wasn't Christmas today," said Rudy.
After everyone in the vicinity had finished laughing and gathered themselves, Gobert elaborated a bit. "It's a lot of different factors," he said. "The lineup was a bit different ... Defense. They played a little different on . They tried to be aggressive, but differently. So yeah, it's great that he's holding himself accountable.
"Because he knows that in those situations a lot of times we depend on him making the right play and he's gotten so much better at doing that ... It shows that he cares and that he sees what's happening out there. "
This is a great response from Gobert following what was certainly a difficult loss. After injecting a bit of humor into the situation, Rudy gives a great perspective on his belief in Anthony Edwards. While the Wolves' offense left a lot to be desired down the stretch of this one, there is still great chemistry between these guys.
