The Minnesota Timberwolves will face some clear hurdles as they attempt to trade for a star this summer. They lack draft capital, already have a steep payroll, and their two main trade candidates are flawed players in their 30s. As such, it's fair to be dubious of the Wolves' ability to land a high-end co-star alongside Anthony Edwards despite fans wanting to see this outcome.

Regardless, Tim Connelly's track record of making big splashes should give fans hope that a trade for a star is possible.

Connelly famously traded for Rudy Gobert in 2022, then two years later, he flipped Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round pick, which became Joan Beringer.

While Gobert could be on the move again, trading for him was an undeniable success. The Randle-KAT swap remains controversial, but it bolstered the Wolves' depth and helped them re-sign Naz Reid. Trading up for Rob Dillingham in 2024 ended up being a total flop, but it's further proof that Connelly is willing to make unexpected yet massive trades.

It can't be guaranteed that Connelly will pull off a brilliant move like the Gobert trade. However, you best believe that Connelly will be extremely aggressive, which ultimately gives the Wolves a strong chance to land a star.

Tim Connelly should give fans confidence that the Timberwolves will trade for a star

In addition to Connelly's track record of making major trades, during his exit interview, he said, "We're going to try to be as aggressive as possible."  Connelly's comments should further give fans hope that the Wolves will make a major splash this summer.

With the need for a better co-star alongside Ant-Man, this is the exact mentality fans want to hear.

The Wolves have, of course, been in non-stop rumors for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Trading for him will be challenging given the Wolves' lack of high-end young talent and draft capital, but with Connelly running the show, it can't be ruled out.

Whether it's a three-team trade or Connelly uses another trade for young assets as a precursor, there's a path for the Wolves to land Giannis.

Kyrie Irving is another trade target Wolves fans have advocated for, and he is someone the Wolves are considered likely to pursue. While it's unclear if the Dallas Mavericks would covet Randle or Gobert, Connelly setting up a three-team blockbuster trade or finding a way to sweeten the Wolves' offer is possible.

Connelly's moves have had one common theme: unpredictability. Thus, it's possible that when the Wolves make a move this summer, it's for an outside-of-the-box trade target that fans never expected.

In any event, Connelly's openly aggressive mindset and track record of making big moves should give all Wolves fans hope that a star trade will happen this summer despite the team facing some clear obstacles.
