Bones Hyland has been considered the favorite to earn a roster spot with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Trusted Timberwolves insider Jon Krawczynski reaffirmed this belief recently by saying the Wolves will sign Bones, but it might not happen until September.
It will be Bones. May stretch into September, but that's gonna be the play.

While the move isn't official yet, all signs point to the Wolves signing Hyland, and Krawczynski is extremely reliable for Wolves news. Hyland spent the second half of last season with the Wolves on a two-way contract. The entire offseason, the Wolves have prioritized continuity, and re-signing Hyland would be the latest example of this.
Technically, the Wolves still have two open roster spots. However, they signed Johnny Juzang to a training camp deal where he will compete for one of the open spots. Perhaps Hyland will also be on a training camp deal. It's possible that both players make the final roster, but keeping one spot open for some extra financial flexibility is a real possibility as well.
Signing Bones Hyland is logical for the Wolves
Point guard depth has been the key area of improvement for the Wolves, so signing Hyland makes sense. Notably, a soon-to-be 38-year-old Mike Conley and second-year Rob Dillingham are currently the Wolves' lone point guards. Krawczynski previously noted that Malcolm Brogdon, Cameron Payne, and Landry Shamet were in play for the Wolves' final roster spot. While Shamet is an off-guard, both players show that the Wolves are prioritizing guard play to round out their roster.
Hyland didn't play much with the Wolves last season, appearing in just four games, totalling 17 minutes, and five points. The 6-foot-2 guard likely won't crack the rotation. However, if Hyland needs to play in a pinch, he could. Finding someone who won't disrupt Dillingham's development yet can play minutes if need be is ideal.
While Hyland hasn't played much over the past two seasons with the Wolves and the Los Angeles Clippers, he is a gifted shot creator. The Denver Nuggets drafted Hyland with the 26th overall pick in 2021. This was back when Tim Connelly was the Nuggets general manager, which further connects Bones to the Wolves' organization. Hyland averaged 10.9 points and 2.9 assists in his first two seasons in the NBA. He is a prototypical microwave scorer.
Ultimately, signing Hyland will give the Wolves some nice perimeter shot creation off the bench and perfectly fits their offseason theme of continuity. It seems like a matter of time before he's officially back on the roster.
