It is now known when and where the Minnesota Timberwolves' regular-season opener will be taking place. They will be heading on the road to take on the Miami Heat in 71 short days, on October 21.
An away game at the Kaseya Center is not an easy way for the Wolves to begin the season. There will be plenty of excitement in the Heat's home arena for Giannis Antetokounmpo’s regular-season debut, while Minnesota fans will get to tune in at home or at a local bar to check out LaMelo Ball’s first-ever regular-season game with the Timberwolves.
A star backcourt (Timberwolves) versus a star frontcourt (Heat)
Two of the more notable players to be traded to new teams this offseason are Antetokounmpo and Ball. Now, the two get to face off against each other in their first games with Miami and Minnesota, respectively, in what should be a competitive affair.
The two clubs don't exactly have similar roster builds. The Heat's star power comes from Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo leading Miami’s frontcourt. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves possess arguably the most dynamic backcourt in the league, featuring Ball and Anthony Edwards.
Davion Mitchell is one of the league’s top perimeter defenders and will often be tasked with defending either of Minnesota’s explosive guards. Meanwhile, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert will work hard to stymie the Greek Freak and Adebayo.
The Timberwolves will also see their former No. 1 overall pick, Andrew Wiggins, who was selected in 2014, playing for the opposition. Miami has participated in the Play-In Tournament for four straight years, a run it certainly hopes will end after adding Antetokounmpo.
While they play in different conferences, both teams are viewed as being in a similar tier, with a little over two months remaining until the regular season begins. DraftKings Sportsbook has the Wolves tied for the sixth-best title odds at +2500, while the Heat are at +3000.
In the head-to-head matchup, the Timberwolves have won three in a row against Miami, including both meetings last season by a combined 38 points. The two clubs have met up 72 times all-time, and they are all squared up at 36 wins apiece.
While the spread for the game is not yet known as of this writing, the Timberwolves will likely be listed as slight underdogs because they are the road team. The final result could come down to which team has acclimated more quickly to its new star player.
