NBA free agency is rapidly approaching on June 30th. The Minnesota Timberwolves have several key free agents. One of the Wolves' most notable free agents is Julius Randle. The All-Star caliber forward has a $30.9 million player option. Randle has until the eve of free agency on, to opt in or out of his player option. If Randle opts in, he could negotiate a contract extension with the Wolves. As a result, his free agency decision could come sooner rather than later.

Randle's value and impact

Shortly before training camp, Randle and Donte DiVincenzo were shockingly traded to the Wolves in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns. While Randle got off to a slow start, he finished the season with averages of 18.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists on 48.5/34.4/80.6 shooting splits. Undoubtedly, Randle is incredibly valuable to the Wolves as a shot creator next to Anthony Edwards.

Randle's value was on full display during the playoffs; he averaged 21.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists with 50.2/38.5/88 shooting splits. He was especially impactful in the first-round against the Lakers. Given Randle's shot creation and scoring abilities, the Wolves will prioritize bringing him back. Notably, head coach Chris Finch said he "absolutely" expects Randle and Naz Reid to re-sign. Furthermore, Randle has said he'd love to return to Minnesota. Given this, it feels nearly certain that Randle will re-sign.

Nevertheless, Randle's value is difficult to gauge. Randle could sign a deal worth four years, $184 million. However, with the Wolves' payroll already being high and some of Randle's inconsistencies, he'll likely be re-signed for a good amount less. As he made $30 million annually on his last deal, Randle can still earn a solid raise. A three-year deal worth $110 million or a four-year $140 million deal are possibilities to watch. Perhaps even a new two-year contract or extension with a similar annual value is possible.

Possible suitors

There seemed like a chance that Randle might not return to Minnesota during the Wolves' pursuit of Kevin Durant. However, without Durant, it feels all but guaranteed that Randle will return to Minnesota. In terms of other possible suitors around the league, the Miami Heat could be an interesting sign-and-trade possibility. But that's just speculating based on fit and their desire for another star.

Overall, the Wolves are the most likely team to give Randle a hefty payday and give him the best chance to compete for a title. For both sides, running it back is logical.

Prediction

All signs point to Randle re-signing with Minnesota; he wants to return, and there are no clear suitors on the open market. My prediction is that Randle will opt out of his deal and re-sign on a three-year $110 million deal. This gives Randle a nice pay raise without breaking the bank for the Wolves.
