When the Minnesota Timberwolves made their bold move to trade Karl-Anthony Towns back in September, they did it at least partly because of the prospect of acquiring Donte DiVincenzo. Minnesota reportedly had interest in Donte for over a year before trading for him. Once that option was put on the table, they immediately jumped at the opportunity.
But once he arrived in the Twin Cities, it took a minute for DiVincenzo's talent to truly shine through. His early struggles were notable, and they led many to call for him to be traded. However, the Timberwolves themselves had no interest in moving him so soon. It was clear his skill was going to make an impact sooner or later, and patience was going to be a virtue.
Now, we are seeing the fruits of waiting things out and allowing Donte to settle in. He put together unquestionably his best performance of the season Sunday night in the Wolves' win over the San Antonio Spurs, posting 26 points and five made threes, all while bringing irreplaceable intangibles and things that simply can not be measured in a box score.
It was the latest remarkable outing in what has been a fantastic stretch for the sharp-shooting guard. DiVincenzo is averaging 16.8 points since December 19, while shooting a red-hot 48.8% from behind the three-point arc. It's all coming together for him.
DiVincenzo has been shining in a big way
Donte spoke after the win over San Antonio about his recent success. "I know what I can do. Everybody on the team knows what I can do," he said. "It's more of the mental side of things. Like I said, there's no excuses. There's a grace period that I have to give myself as well. Understanding that it's a new offense, new city, new everything. So just understanding to take the good with the bad, because I know the tides are turning, everybody here has the most confidence in me."
Those words line up perfectly with the steady improvement we have seen from DiVincenzo. After a disappointing few weeks, he never let himself get too low and stayed the course, knowing that he would be able to make the kind of impact everyone expected from him eventually.
Against the Spurs on Sunday, we finally saw the kind of breakout performance that reminded everyone of what Donte can bring this team at his best. His mantra of "taking the good with the bad" played out right in front of our eyes in one of the most crucial junctures of the game. With 1:36 remaining in the fourth quarter and Minnesota up by three, DiVincenzo missed a three-pointer that would have put some serious distance between his team and the visitors.
Not getting dismayed over a missed opportunity, Donte immediately hustled down the floor to make a clutch play, deflecting Chris Paul's pass to Victor Wembanyama that would have almost certainly resulted in a San Antonio bucket - and would have cut the Timberwolves' lead to one.
That five-second sequence exemplifies what DiVincenzo is about. Wolves fans should celebrate the fact they have a total team player like Donte on their roster. His presence will continue to be huge as this team keeps building.
