Minnesota Timberwolves fans are getting to experience something in recent years that they missed out on for decades. Are the Timberwolves becoming synonymous with playing on Christmas Day?
The franchise began play in 1989, and they didn’t have their first Christmas Day game until 2016. Minnesota also got one the following year before having to wait until 2024 to play on the holiday again.
Last year, the Wolves played the Denver Nuggets on December 25. Minnesota has done enough and still has one of the most popular players in Anthony Edwards, so it’s likely they'll get another game on that date for the third straight year. The obvious choice with their recent history is for them to play Denver again.
A rematch that seems like a necessary one Â
Now, I think it would be cool if the Wolves were scheduled to play the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs on Christmas Day. That way, the whole world could see if Minnesota is at either of their levels, as those two teams are seen as the class of the Western Conference.
In all likelihood, though, OKC and the Spurs are set for their own Christmas Day crash course. That leaves the easy answer being that the Timberwolves once again should meet up with the Nuggets for the second consecutive year.
The two have squared up in the playoffs in three of the last four seasons. Their postseason meeting got even more contentious last season due in part to Jaden McDaniels’ smack talk. McDaniels essentially called out every key member of the Nuggets by saying they are all bad defenders.
Plus, last year’s game on Christmas was a doozy between the two clubs. The Timberwolves overcame a 15-point deficit with 6.5 minutes to go as an Edwards 3-pointer with a second left forced overtime (Denver ended up winning by four).
The two main stars had standout performances in that contest. Edwards scored 44 points, with 24 of those coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. Nikola Jokic had a ridiculous triple-double, scoring 56 points, grabbing 16 rebounds, and dishing out 15 assists.
There’s no love lost between the two teams. More star power has been added to the matchup with Minnesota trading for LaMelo Ball. Once the Christmas Day schedule is revealed, there is a high likelihood that Denver and Minnesota will be on the docket. Maybe this time it will be at the Target Center.
