Despite the Minnesota Timberwolves having an impressive amount of success over the past three seasons, it seems like talking heads in the media want to speculate about Anthony Edwards' future. These discussions resurfaced this week when Timberwolves reporter Darren Wolfson mentioned that the Timberwolves' worst fear is Edwards requesting a trade.Â
What got lost was that he also said, "We are nowhere near that point." Of course, though these comments went viral on social media, which led some folks to speculate about Ant's future.
During a recent appearance on The Ryen Russillo Show, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic made it clear that Edwards is happy in Minnesota while discussing the importance of continuing to surround him with a competitive roster.Â
"There has been no indications that he (Ant) is getting restless, that he is getting impatient. But you can't wait around for that to happen, you have to be proactive and aggressive, going out, making sure you have the team around him," Krawczynski said.Â
Alright, can we stop the silly discussions about Ant's future in Minnesota now?Â
The Timberwolves will have to improve their roster around Ant, but that doesn't mean his future is in doubt
Without a doubt, the Wolves should do whatever it takes to maximize their chances of winning a title with Ant, and they shouldn't be satisfied with making it to the second-round this season. Being aggressive is what every front office should be when they have a superstar like Edwards. And yes, you have to consider making sure your superstar is happy long-term.Â
However, this mindset doesn't mean that Edwards is in any way close to asking out, and Krawczynski's comments should ensure that this is indeed the case. After two conference finals appearances in three years, there's really no reason for Ant to be unhappy.
The Wolves absolutely must improve their roster around Edwards and get him a quality second option. Given their lack of draft capital and high-end trade assets, the Wolves will have to get creative in order to pull off a big move. There's also no denying that the Wolves have a difficult time moving close to the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs tier.Â
Krawczynski mentioned Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kyrie Irving as targets he expects the Wolves to look at.
In addition to Krawczynski's comments, president of basketball operations, Tim Connelly, made it clear that "Everything's on the table" for the Wolves this offseason, setting the stage for the team to chase a star to pair with Edwards. As such, all signs point to the Wolves aggressively pursuing a better co-star alongside Ant.
Make no mistake, though, the Wolves are in the midst of their most successful run in franchise history. Sure, they still have to elevate the roster around Ant-Man, but overall, they are in a great spot, and there's no reason to speculate about his future.Â
