Timberwolves need an Ayo Dosunmu shift to thrive with Donte DiVincenzo sidelined

It won’t be easy to replace what Donte DiVincenzo brings to the court for the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 29-year-old started all 82 games for Minnesota during the regular season before DiVincenzo tore his Achilles in Game 4 of the opening round of the playoffs against the Denver Nuggets.

DiVincenzo will sorely be missed until he is able to return to the court. That may or may not come during the 2026-27 season. Along with Anthony Edwards, the two were arguably the most prolific 3-point shooting backcourt in the NBA.

If re-signed, there’s a good chance Ayo Dosunmu will take over DiVincenzo’s place in the starting lineup next season. Acquired via trade in February, the 26-year-old is a capable marksman from deep as well. In DiVincenzo’s absence though, Dosunmu will need to increase his rate of attempting 3-pointers next season.

Dosunmu's three-point rate was half of DiVincenzo's

Over the last two seasons, Edwards has led the NBA with 525 made 3-pointers. In a tie for 10th is DiVincenzo, who has connected on 418. The year before (2023-24), DiVincenzo set a new single-season record for the New York Knicks when he made a whopping 283 treys.

Dosunmu is certainly a capable shooter from beyond the arc. After joining Minnesota, he made 41.4% of his 3-point tries in 24 regular season outings. That continued in his 10 postseason appearances, as Dosunmu knocked down 42.5 percent from deep. When including his time with the Chicago Bulls this year before being traded, his 43.9 percent 3-point shooting was sixth-best in the league.

The rate at which DiVincenzo and Dosunmu put up 3-pointers is a stark difference between the two of them, though. While DiVincenzo attempted 9.3 per 36 minutes, Dosunmu was less than half of that at 4.5 after joining the Wolves. Even with The Big Ragu appearing in all 82 games in 2025-26, Minnesota still only ranked 17th in the league with 37.2 3-point attempts per contest.

To make up for DiVincenzo’s loss, the team will need Dosunmu to put up more attempts from deep. It may hurt his efficiency a bit, but it’s also important to have someone alongside Ant-Man in the backcourt shooting plenty of 3-pointers.

Edwards is an example of someone who has learned to balance his ability to drive to the hoop while also keeping the defense fearful of his ability to put up a lot of 3-pointers in an accurate manner. It’s something that the Timberwolves will need Dosunmu to do a better job of as well, as long as Ayo is still on the team.
