With the NBA trade deadline now behind us, the Minnesota Timberwolves can move forward with the remainder of their season. Perhaps there was a move around the edges the Wolves could have made, but it is certainly not the end of the world that they did not completely shake up the roster and try to do something drastic. At least, that's the opinion of Chris Finch.
But according to insider reports, Minnesota amazingly almost pulled off a trade of the like. We knew that Tim Connelly was going to be working the phones and putting in long hours, and even though a trade did not ultimately go down, we now know that the Timberwolves tried to do something massive: trade for Kevin Durant.
The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski wrote about Minnesota's last-ditch effort to throw their name in the KD sweepstakes. Krawczynski writes: Connelly and the Timberwolves explored getting into the Durant sweepstakes to unite him with his Olympic pal, Anthony Edwards, team sources told The Athletic. Timberwolves sources believed Durant would have been open to coming to Minnesota. Nothing came close to fruition, team sources said, though there was a swell of hope as the day wore on.
Timberwolves made last-minute offer to Suns for Durant
Krawczynski notes that Minnesota would have had to work out a lot of moving parts to make a Durant trade possible, since they are a second apron team. It ended up being too complicated a maneuver, but one team source reportedly called the potential pairing "Batman and Robin."
It is certainly exciting to envision KD and Edwards playing together, and the fact that Durant was supposedly open to joining Minnesota is highly intriguing. Perhaps that could open up the doors for a potential collaboration in the future.
Fans have obviously teased the idea of Ant and KD teaming up for a while now, ever since they played on the US Olympic squad together, and ever since Edwards revealed that Durant is his favorite player of all-time. Getting one of the all-time great scorers on the Timberwolves' roster would certainly be a dream scenario, and there is nothing to say it cannot happen further down the line.
