The Minnesota Timberwolves have had two roster spots available for quite some time. While they don’t need to fill both, names have been speculated as to who they can sign to take up one of them. One name that has constantly been brought up, and still is being mentioned, is Malcolm Brogdon.

Timberwolves still have interest in Malcolm Brogdon

Jake Fischer, part of Marc Stein’s The Stein Line, posted his most recent Substack article on Thursday. In it, he talks about the Wolves’ interest in Brogdon.

"I'm told Brogdon has also been on the radar for both the Knicks and the Timberwolves, which (as noted above) are two of the teams that have been monitoring Beasley's status," Fischer wrote.

Malik Beasley reportedly is looking for more than the veteran’s minimum, something Minnesota can’t offer without exceeding the second apron. Fischer’s article also mentions that the Timberwolves are still actively trying to bring back point guard Bones Hyland. It was previously reported that Hyland's return to the Timberwolves is likely.

It’s unclear if Brogdon, a much more accomplished player than Hyland, is trying to secure a deal for greater than the veteran’s minimum. This late in the offseason though, it may be hard for him to procure one.

Brogdon is talented but injury-prone

Turning 33 years old on December 11, the 6-foot-4 Brogdon has hardware from his nine-year playing career. He won Sixth Man of the Year with the Celtics in 2022-23 and was named Rookie of the Year in 2016-17 while with the Bucks.

The 2024-25 season seemed like an outlier for him with the Wizards, as he connected on just 28.6 percent of his 3-point tries. Brogdon is a career 38.5 percent shooter from beyond the arc, and he had shot 40 percent or more in the two seasons before last.

Unfortunately, a major issue in Brogdon’s career has been his inability to stay healthy. Since playing 75 games as a rookie, he’s only made at least 56 appearances in two of his other eight years in the NBA. The last two years, Brogdon has combined to play just 63 games.

While Brogdon can potentially raise the ceiling of a Timberwolves team expected to start soon-to-be 38-year-old Mike Conley, it’s hard to rely on someone who can’t stay in the lineup. With Rob Dillingham slated for a larger role in his second season, it may behoove the Timberwolves to allow the 20-year-old to further gain playing experience rather than signing someone who will steal some of his minutes.
