With the Minnesota Timberwolves likely to be an apron team, they will have to go bargain shopping if they want to bring any outside free agents. One potential option is Phoenix Suns wing Amir Coffey, who is a seven-year NBA veteran. Coffey can provide outside shooting to a team that will be missing Donte DiVincenzo for most, if not all, of next season.
Under-the-radar minimum players can return great value, though. Take a look at the NBA Finals: Landry Shamet is proving that you can get bang for your buck on a minimum-salary player.
Shamet has played 63 minutes over the first two games for the New York Knicks and knocked down six 3-pointers. It's remarkable that he is such a huge part of an NBA finalist, when it was just months ago that he was battling for the last roster spot with guys such as Garrison Mathews and Malcolm Brogdon.
Coffey could provide great value on small contractÂ
There’s a good chance that adding Coffey will just take an Exhibit 10, non-guaranteed contract to make him earn a roster spot with the Timberwolves. How do I know this? Because that’s what he signed last offseason with the Milwaukee Bucks before he was traded to Phoenix in February.
It was a bit surprising that a guy who was in his late 20s (turns 29 on June 17) wasn’t able to garner a standard contract when, in 2024-25 with the Los Angeles Clippers, he averaged 9.7 points and connected on 40.9 percent of his 3-point tries. The outside shooting should be appealing to Minnesota, as well as his being a 6-foot-7 wing that can be utilized at shooting guard or small forward.
With the Bucks, Coffey just never seemed to fit in and was out of the rotation at times. While he didn’t play all that much in Phoenix, he did shoot 10-24 (41.7 percent) from beyond the arc. For his career, he is a 38.2 percent 3-point shooter.
Bringing in Coffey would also be a bit of a homecoming for him. Coffey was born in Minnesota (Hopkins), went to Hopkins High School, and played collegiately for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The Wolves will likely add a wing player or two with DiVincenzo out with a torn Achilles. Giving Coffey a non-guaranteed deal will make him need to earn his spot on Minnesota’s roster. If he were to do so, we’ve seen enough outside shooting during his career that he can battle for a spot in the rotation, or at least be a solid depth piece in case of injuries.
