Whether it's Julius Randle's consistency, Jaden McDaniels validating his offensive leap, or Rudy Gobert producing, there are plenty of questions regarding the Minnesota Timberwolves' offense in the playoffs. However, bench production is another massive swing factor, making Naz Reid and Ayo Dosunmu a crucial duo for the Wolves.
On the season, the Wolves rank 23rd in bench scoring. Before trading for Dosunmu, Reid was the lone consistent bench contributor. Notably, his 13.8 points per game account for 42.3 percent of the Wolves' bench points.
However, Dosunmu gives them a second consistent creator and bench scorer. Come playoff time, this could be a massive swing factor, especially given the volatility of several Wolves' starters.
Specifically, Naz is insurance for if Randle starts to slump or if Gobert gets played off the court offensively, while Ayo is insurance for if Donte DiVincenzo has a cold shooting stretch. It's natural to expect down games (or stretches for players), and when this happens, having bench players who step up is vital.
Consistent production from Reid and Dosunmu will be key
During the Wolves' past two seasons, they rallied around the slogan of eight starters. This was undoubtedly a big reason why they were able to make two straight conference finals runs. Nevertheless, the offseason loss of Nickeil Alexander-Walker caused the Wolves' depth to take a massive hit.
With all due respect to Kyle Anderson and Bones Hyland, I can't say the Wolves have eight starters again. Thankfully, though, Dosunmu's presence gives the Wovles seven starting-level players.
Having this duo off the bench can help save the Wolves if their starters come out sluggish. Conversely, if the Wolves' starters are playing well, Naz and Ayo can crush opposing teams' bench units and help Minnesota dominate.
Depth has never been more important in the playoffs; thus, to win at the highest level, the Wolves will need production from Naz and Ayo. Thinking about the best teams in the West, both the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs have several consistent sources of bench production.
The Wolves' bench has, in part, hurt their ability to reach this tier in the regular season. Nevertheless, with consistent production from Naz and Ayo, the Wolves can bridge this gap and put together another deep playoff run, perhaps even a championship run this time. If not, though, the Wolves' playoff upside is limited.
Ultimately, while there are numerous more notable swing factors to the Timberwolves' title hopes, the consistency of Naz and Ayo will be crucial.
