Unsigned point guard could be ideal target for Timberwolves

Minnesota could use a guy like Dennis Smith Jr.

The NBA trade deadline is less than one month away, and the possibility exists that the Minnesota Timberwolves could still be looking to make some kind of move. Trading Julius Randle seems a bit unlikely, but other moves could serve to upgrade the Wolves' roster as well.

It is not a secret that Minnesota could use an additional ball-handling guard with scoring power. Though he is not a point guard, we have seen what benefit Donte DiVincenzo can bring this team when he is inserted into the starting lineup.

With Mike Conley showing his age just a bit more this season and with Rob Dillingham getting limited run even before his injury, exploring more options among point guards could be well worth the Timberwolves' while. One name Minnesota could consider that many are probably not talking about is Dennis Smith Jr.

Timberwolves should look at adding Dennis Smith Jr.

The veteran guard is 27 years old and currently without an NBA squad to call home. Just last month, he was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks' G League team, the Wisconsin Herd. Prior to that, he had spent the previous three NBA seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets and Portland Trail Blazers.

Still in his prime, Smith could be a sneaky good pickup for this Timberwolves team. He of course has his flaws, given that he is currently unsigned. Smith has been inconsistent shooting the ball in his career, but used in the proper fashion, he could be a positive for a team like the Wolves looking to climb in the standings.

Dennis' game is predicated on athleticism. He gets out to run and can jump with the best of them. It was just two years ago with the Hornets when he had one of his best pro seasons, averaging 8.8 points and starting 15 times in a 25 minutes per game role in Charlotte.

It is not crazy to think that Finch could find a way to get a lot out of having Smith on his bench. If Dennis is still unsigned by an NBA team in three weeks, Minnesota should think about throwing him a minimum offer.
