On Thursday morning, a report from NBA insider Marc Stein was released that revealed one important bit of information for Minnesota Timberwolves fans. According to Stein, it appears Tim Connelly will be staying in Minnesota for the long haul.
Connelly has an opt-out option available for next season. However, the consensus opinion among those around the NBA is that he will forego leaving the organization this offseason and will stick around on a new contract to continue building the Timberwolves into a championship team.
As we know, Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore are set to become the Wolves' new permanent owners, and the expectation is that they will want to continue working with Connelly and keep having him run Minnesota's basketball operations. We had heard rumors on this subject before, and it's still technically only a rumor as of this writing, but it remains something for Timberwolves fans to celebrate.
Timberwolves reportedly intend to re-sign Connelly
Ever since taking over his current position in May of 2022, Connelly has been one of the main reasons for the Wolves' rise to the level of a Western Conference superpower. From the start, he was unafraid of shaking things up.
Making the Rudy Gobert trade just a couple of months into his tenure proved that quickly. And although we didn't see the fruits of said trade right away, no one was still questioning Connelly when the Wolves defeated the defending champion Denver Nuggets and advanced to the Western Conference Finals with Gobert anchoring the defense.
The Karl-Anthony Towns trade, while unpopular at the time, was a necessary move money-wise and has the Timberwolves in an excellent spot yet again today. Then let's not forget the highway robbery that was pulling off the trade for Mike Conley, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and draft capital for D'Angelo Russell.
Everyone in Minnesota had been waiting to hear good news on Connelly's front, and now it seems he will be around for a long time, with a vision that only he can fully understand. And even though Connelly's ideas may seem convoluted at times, Wolves fans have zero legitimate reason to doubt him.
