The Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in trading for Chicago Bulls guard Coby White, per Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. That move would be absolutely perfect for the Wolves, and the solution to getting a deal done is very obvious: Trade Mike Conley, a young player, an extra contract, and draft capital for White. It would be a win-win deal for both sides.
For the Wolves, getting White to be their point guard of the future would be a massive win, as he could be an ideal building block next to Anthony Edwards moving forward. That backcourt would be a force to be reckoned with, especially while playing alongside the defense of Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert.
Minnesota should definitely act on the idea.
Wolves should trade for Coby White
White has broken out as an impressive young guard in the last few years. His scoring, playmaking, and overall offensive creation have been top-notch when he’s been on the court.
So far this season, White has appeared in seven games for the Bulls since coming back from injury. In 19.3 minutes per game, he has averaged 22.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.4 assists while shooting 43.1% from the floor and 30.2% from deep on 7.6 three-point attempts per game.
That said, he has shot at least 37% from deep in each of the last four seasons, and in the last two, he’s taken at least seven threes per contest.
In his article, Cowley mentioned a package of Donte DiVincenzo, Terrence Shannon Jr., and draft capital being a potential deal that could work for both sides. Since Chicago wants to remain relatively competitive, DiVincenzo could work well for them.
However, in an ideal world (for the Wolves), keeping DiVincenzo while also acquiring White would be what ends up happening. That would give them some great depth at the guard spot in terms of scoring versatility and off-ball play next to Edwards.
Losing a guy like Shannon or Jaylen Clark would be tough, considering both have shown some solid flashes for Minnesota, but adding a win-now talent like White would absolutely make the move worth it.
Plus, White is only 165 days older than Shannon. He’s still only 25 years old. The only downside to trading for him would be having to extend him, which could be a genuine concern for the Wolves.
But at that point, a core of White, Edwards, McDaniels, and Gobert would be elite, meaning they could potentially trade Julius Randle to save money, if that’s the direction they want to go in.
No matter what way it's spun, trading Conley, a young player, and picks for White makes so much sense. (And trading DiVincenzo instead of Conley in the same package would still be a nice deal for Minnesota.)
